This car however was in like new condition 10 years ago. It was owned by a friend of mine who is the ultiimate car enthusiast (who owns a stellar E39 M5 now) and when he owned it was like in showroon condition- yet had 100, 000kms on the clock. This thing has now been neglected - reflected in the shabby drivers seat, grazed wheels, and bumpers that have taken a knock. Sad to see one of the best examples of a 635 in the country back then deteroriate. That is why it is still sitting there for sale. Believe it or not my old burgundy 635 Highline last week sold at Giltraps for near what they wanted ( $27k!!). While it may not be in "like new" condition like you previously state it was. it certainly has not been "neglected". I know the current owner quite well and he does have a genuine reason for sale. I have a friend who works there and Id be lying i i said I hadn't sat in it more than once... never drove it though. Now that was a stunner. As for the white one, I still think it could be brought back to showroom if its not too far off. I know Matt from Newport pretty well also after having bought two cars from him. He is a nice man. It's just that I have had a thing for these old E24's and met the previous owner in 1999 who spent literally all of his spare time grooming the thing and making it like show-room condition. Seriously, the friend I have spoken about is a freak and this thing was a labour of love and at the time his total focus in life.. The car was a total garage queen when he owned it, and he only travelled a few 000 kms in it over a few years. The guy who bought it off him was a doctor who drove it everyday and over time the car kind of changed. I was probably harsh but this car was like new in 2001 and over time certainly looked like it had been driven regularly and was starting to show the effects of regular use. From what I know, the doctor fairly recently sold it to your friend. I suppose I was probably comparing it to my old Burgundy 635csi Highline which was probably in no better condition than this white car back then (in reality, probably worse). Overall, it is still a very unique car - it is very difficult to get a late model "half-line" , NZ new 635csi. There are only about 5 in this country, and they hardly ever pop up for sale. While it's not in Concours condition, it wouldn't take very much to make it so. The previous owner (the fourth since new), did drive it almost daily and it has the patina of a car that has been well cared for, but used. He had mechanically maintained the car regardless of cost and the service books reflect that. I'll admit that i listed the car for sale too soon (the panic of impending fatherhood can do that to a guy!) and hadn't taken care of the minor cosmetic imperfections. Regardless, the amount of attention the car gets is remarkable. I get stopped at gas stations and small groups of people gather around it outside cafe's - and yesterday, even in my driveway!. The 635 is a stunning motorcar (which is why i have two) and my partner loves them just as much. I've decided to take the car off the market, attend to the bits and pieces and keep it. It might be a bit inconvienient getting a baby seat in and out on a sunny Sunday but it's a small sacrifice. I can't think of another 'classic' motorcar that covers as many bases. See you on the road. Ps, I'm looking at converting my other 635 into a road and track car. Hi Matt, There are a few people I can suggest who could help you regarding the manual conversion. One guy who did it by himself is a guy called David Humphreys who is one of the directors of Dynatron car alarms on the shore. I met Dave about 6 years ago and he owned an arctic blue nz new 635csi that he had converted into a manual. He also added new springs and shocks to sharpen up the suspension. The end result was a fun E24. He ended up selling it and one of the members here bought it about 2 odd years ago. He did all the work by himself. Another guy I can recommend is Ross Lamb who owns BM workshop in Botany- he is a BMW independent specialist and has ample knowledge of this type of work- he converted one of his E34's into a pseudo 540is 6 speed manual. As you know, it is extremely difficult to get a NZ new, 635csi manual post 1985.' I have only seen one - it was a cosmic or cirrus blue example and it was a 1986. All of the rest were evidently auto. One thing that I notice too is that apart from the 'Half-line' 635csi's in NZ like your Alpine example, nearly all of the 84-87's have 'comfort seats.' It’s a 20+ year old car relatively cheap practical classic, its not a $150,000 near new car and it’s not a rare Porsche or Ferrari or something collectable like a E30 M3. Nice car but its confused as to what it wants to be and I couldn’t live with a dashboard that, to put it nicely, “retroâ€. Personally if I was going for a classic cruiser it would have a diamond on the bonnet. I would be looking at a 500SL.
