I just bought a E34 540i...

Recommended Posts

Just bought this beast, she's old but seems to drive alright.

Picked it up this-arvo from Gaza.

Off to Eurorec tomorrow to tidy it up a bit and maybe put some nicer wheels on her.

Anyone here want to quote me for a manual conversion (better be quick before I spend my $!)

EDIT:

18'' Schnizer M5 wheels

Whitewall tyres

USB/iPod/Mp3 Headunit installed

Oil+Filter done

Air box debaffled

Fluids refreshed

Spark plugs replaced (Felt strange asking for 8 plugs at the shop!)

Full cut and polish on body

Transmission service booked in for Wednesday

Old photos removed - this is why she looks like now:

Mmmm if only I had the $!

I'm only staying in NZ for the next year and a half.

I have about $2000 to spend on the car and am looking at doing whatever ASAP.

Need it to stay very reliable.

now what? ....

save money for gas

Too true!

2k will get you a getrag 420g landed from the states. If you are lucky. Then you need flywheel, driveshaft, pedal box and clutch.

Doing mine sometime in the next 12 months. would be sooner, but have a wedding to pay for!

You cannot convert for 2k. Trust me.

I'd say suspension and maintenance should make your budget disappear nicely....

Welcome to the e34 club :)

Well you should have some fun in that.

What's the mileage on it?

If it's really high, changing the tranny fluid can actually make things worse...

Edit, I would agree with Ian above, the suspension is more than likely going to need a good spend of money on it. Trouble I found with my E34 was after doing some repairs on the suspension, it emphasized the age in the next part so that then needed attention. As you can imagine it got rather expensive, and the job was only 1/2 done so I figured it was best to flick the car up on TM before I went completely broke.

Great, thanks for the heads up.

How much lower would you go?

I don't want it to be too bumpy / a cop-magnet.

I will probably be able to spend upto maybe 2800 including removing the tape deck (heh).

I'm off to Eurorec today to look for suspension and wheels.

If I don't find any decent setups there I'll look at getting something new.

What oil do you guys use in yours? Just the standard semi 15-40?

Edit: why would flushing the trans make It worse?

It's done 130miles so that's about 210kms

White walls looks awesome! Nice work.

Tempted to do the same to the E36 for the "bigger wheel" look

How much did that cost you?

I'm going to go against it and dislike the white walls. Makes the wheels look too big but it's not my car anymore.

Making good use of the day off huh :)

My mate owns whitewalltyres.co.nz so I got it done at 'mates rates'.

They're not very expensive even at full price though, check out their website!

Booked in to get the cat cut out and a straight pipe (with the o2 sensor installed) in place tomorrow at Magoo. :)

Is the rest of the exhaust stock?

If it is, and you remove the cats, the rear muffler will sound a little trashy and rattly at certain rev points, it did on mine - a bit nasty, I'd put in a dual in dual out muffler, or some resonators if I was doing it again.

Hmmm I can't really afford to go the whole hog.

I'll keep the cat when it's removed so I can put it in if it's horrid.

The tech from Eurorec gutted his cat and it sounds pretty nice.
