huff3r 347 Report post Posted March 17, 2011 Is there anyone in the Wellington region who can do an insurance valuation on a 1985 BMW 320i, and also covering the TSW mag wheels? State needs it before they'll believe my car is worth $2k. Even if someone just knows where I could go? Would Jeff Gray do it? And would they charge me? Cheers, Paul

Am I asking too much? Is an '85 320i with 235,000kms worth $2k? And is a practically brand new set of TSWs worth $400 (Really old, but never been used up til last month. TSW Stealth). AN E30 Fan 1 Report post Posted March 17, 2011 I dont think so, Mines valued at 3k, and I think its worth 3.5k. '86 318i btw. Mine has some goodies though, BBS Wheels and Bilstien Suspension.
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted March 18, 2011 I took my wagon to a few place on wednesay, Jeff Gray said it was worth $1500 despite the schnitzer goodness and a 60k engine. Absolute joke. I plan to go to McGuiness, he always has classics, and though he specialised in british cars, he knows most of the euros and thier rarity. Ill be taking the car to him in a few weeks one ive tidied a few more things. I perve his show room when i go to my storage place at the back of his ha
j.ingledew 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2011 Try NAC, I insured my car and my partner is insuring her car with them, they go on agreed value, actual agreed value so that you can nominate the amount. If you get full coverage you get free roadside assistance, windshield and glass cover and a few other goodies. Very happy I insured with them, they know a thing or two about modifying cars too. They have a $150 windscreen excess. I can get a new (secondhand) screen and fit it myself for that. I have my racecar insured with them, and would definitely insure with them again if I had a car that no-one normal would insure, but for the rest of my vehicles id rather go with a general purpose insurer. Might try that McGuiness place on monday. Oh, and NAC tends to be reasonably pricy... although i do have a 3 year history with them..
AN E30 Fan 1 Report post Posted March 18, 2011 (edited) What NAC don't actually tell you is that you have an excess for each car you crash into, i.e. if you crash your car into another one and NAC says your excess is $1200 then you have to pay $1200 for each car so $2400 total Edited March 18, 2011 by AJ_D

scottr 11 Report post Posted March 18, 2011 I've heard that about NAC as well, but have never had to insure a car with them so unsure if it's actually true. Surely thats not legal? If you agree to it why wouldn't it be? Great case for reading the fineprint.
AN E30 Fan 1 Report post Posted March 18, 2011 Unfortunately enough it is legal. They just put it in fine print on your policy, there is a special name for that type of excess but I can't remember it now. Family friend of ours told me, he runs Insure Direct who I'm insured with. kevinator9 57 Report post Posted March 19, 2011 (edited) That is odd because I am with state and I insured my 1985 318i Coupe for $3K no problem. I just said that was how much it was worth and they said ok. They did throw on a nice excess because it was a BMW though Edited March 19, 2011 by kevinator9

And it's because it was initially insured for $1200 when it was just 3rd party fire + theft, but now i want full.
kevinator9 57 Report post Posted March 19, 2011 (edited) Yep, I get the under 21 excess and a $500 excess for it being an old BMW. Apparently because parts for it are deemed expensive. Their records for E30's only go back to 1986 so when I said it was a 1985 they have put it on my policy as "1985 BMW or earlier". Apparently NAC DOES NOT do agreed value, and cannot insure a car worth less than $3k for full insurance. Oh, and to prove it's worth more than $3k it needs a valuation. Im really disliking insurance companies at the moment. Especially after spending over $3.5k with NAC in recent years.

Maybe go to turners and get them to put in writing what they think the car would sell for at auction. I took my wagon to a few place on wednesay, Jeff Gray said it was worth $1500 despite the schnitzer goodness and a 60k engine. Absolute joke. A dealer would trade something like that for $1,500 and that is what they would base their valuation on. Im sorry but an E34 Touring isn't a classic... huff3r 347 Report post Posted March 21, 2011 Car has been valued at $3k with the wheels, however the valuation didnt specify the value of the wheels seperate to the value of the car so I'm still being sent running in circles. Complete PITA to be honest, and I am really dissapointed in both the insurance companies I have spoken to for making my life so difficult, rather than trying to sell their product to me. Their customer service is a load of bollocks.
