Jammers - What's the guts?

Recommended Posts

I've been told by some people that they are illegal and then by some that they aren't then by some that it's a grey area.

My car "may" have them installed from the previous owner and there could be a switch below to activate a little LED on the pillar.

Any ideas?

My friend (who's a cop) told me that they can pull people over who are suspected of using them and inspect or have the car inspected for one and if caught you can be fined 15k or have your car confiscated.

Worth the risk? I dunno!

Ha, but if someone had them in there without the new owner knowing about them then?

I imagine we're talking about laser jammer (srambler) here?

Because laser reading can't be ascertained by just one hit, the operator has to get at least two hits on the target car to get an accurate reading.

The idea is that the jammer will scramble the first laser hit, beeps and the driver turns off the jammer while slowing down as well (of course). By the time the operator obtains the second reading the speed of the target car will hopefully within the acceptable limit.

Or so I was told.

It's a necessary equipment in areas where laser radar gun operates.

Checky is a more appropriate word Glenn. 318 Touring is right. A jammer is only deemed illegal when it indefinitely jamms a cops laser. Jammers, atleast what we have fitted will jam the laser for round 5 seconds ( time to slow down ) then release the jam. Which at the moment is perfectly legal.

If your not convinced Ring Rapid radio and let them explain it for you. As they have been selling em for years. Technical arguments on here round this topic usually end in a topic close :) And I'm sure this has been covered on numerous occasions.

The Jammer in my fathers E55 is Active all the time and 100% hidden. It will give a solid tone for around 5 seconds when it is jamming. Then switch off for a set period of time. This allows you to slow down.

There is only one decent brand avalible in NZ. http://www.laserstar.co.nz/

The guy was on the forum a while back. I think he likes VW's or something. No idea why.

Do not bother with the shitty Passive Jammers. They do not work. This has been proven over and over.

It has to be active. This means it is always jamming. Even if it is not you being targeted.

its been said sort of but...

There is no law against "Laser Jammers"

There is law against interference with police equipment

AFAIK no one has ever been done in NZ for having them.

Edit: I run a Escort 9500ci laser jammer/radar detector, have had it go off with laser before (saw cop pinging me) but i'm unsure as to whether i was actually going fast enough to get pulled over so i cant confirm if it actually did its job or not, reviews online seem to suggest it is a reasonable system but not the best. Most systems will eventually fail to jam if you are really close to the gun but generally they ping from a distance so you should have time to slow down. RRP is 2500NZD (which i did not pay). Running a V1 for radar and a laserstar would be a good option.

also remember for installation the laser (or rather infrared light) is line of sight so the jammer heads need to be located in clear view of the road to work, not behind grills etc (plastic or not).

Of course, if you dont speed......

Walking is better, safer, healthier and doesn't kill.

How 'bout that?

You'll probably get mugged or raped. Or punched and killed by a drunk wanker waiting in line after work at McDonalds.

To chuck it out there, the speed limit of 100kph was put up when cars could hardly do 100kph on worse roads and cars that took 500 miles to stop. Now, with safer cars we still have the same farkin limit. Fair enough it needs to be limited in places, but on some parts i.e Canterbury plains it should be 120kph.

Are you crazy? If you go faster than 100kph kittens and babies will die!

Laser uses light dosent it?

Some radio / light frequency are restricted and you require a license to transmit on these frequencies. Tho the laserstar website says the frequency the police use is not restricted and anyone can transmit on it.

But I guess if the police really wanted they could still get you under 'obstruction' :D

Gotta laugh at the extent people will go to, to evade the law, and the amount of money they waste trying to do so.

Bunch of fools buying pointless gadgets when there's such an easy (and free) way to avoid tickets.

During the day, in residential and built up areas, I usually keep to the speed limits because a) you usually end up at the same place at the same time and B) I hate people who speed when there are children and pedestrians about.

However, at night, on a long trip where I happen to be the only car on the road, I go at whatever speed I deem to be safe. If it's 120kmh on a long, flat road, then so be it.

120-130kmh when you are the only one on the road is safer than 100kmh on a congested motorway, with slow responding drivers. All other factors being equal, of course
