Recommended suspension specialist - centralish Auckland

Recommended Posts

HI all

I need to get my rear shocks replace in my e30 coupe as they are shot to sh*t. At the same time id like to get my rear bushings replaced with urethane ones i had imported a while ago.

Can anyone recommend someone closeish to Auckland central(purely for getting there and back, ill happily make an effort to go further afield for someone who is awesome) that you would recommend? Anyone got a ball park figure as what it should cost?

What do people recommend brand/spec wise for shocks btw?

Thanks in advance

Bilstein or Koni are the norm, either are a good upgrade from factory.

Try ringing autolign for the shocks, they're easy to replace yourself.

Stocks for koni stuff. Any mechanic should be able to install them for you.

Chris at Centreline Suspension (aka Shock Shop). He's ~$80/hr for labour, and said would take whole day i.e 6-8 hrs for all the rear bushes.

oh, you could look for 2nd hand bilsteins in bad or good condition, and get them rebuilded if needed.

You should give it a go yourself ? It took me a weekend to take mine in and out.. Burnt the old bushes out !!! - so much fun.

Depending on what you are doing you may not need expensive shocks, for your average Joe Koni/Billy may be overkill and unnecessary, KYB from Repco at 1/4 the price maybe all you need.

I'm sure the places listed above are quite good, have used race-line and on a good day they are good, maybe less enthusiastic than I would hope for. I found Anthony at alignment specialists in Penrose to be very honest, enthusiastic and thorough and he didn't charge me an arm and a leg, he races and you can see he takes pride in what he does. Just another option at least, there are some cowboys out there so its good to have options.

I would make the investment with Bilstein, I am currently doing mine, found Matt at Auto Align Mt Wellington very helpful, do not get discouraged at the fact there are none in NZ, there are options and also importing them.

A "tuned" suspension makes a very happy car, do it once - do it right

cheers

I'm importing a set of bilstein sports and H&R springs from the states thats only costing me 1340NZD all up including shipping.

Thats almost the same as a set of monroes ($1000) off trademe for the same vehicle.

Look around online; Ireland engineering & Turner Msport are good for e30 parts. Ask for priority shipping and its actually pretty reasonable.

If you buy the good stuff you will appreciate the ride and the fact you wont have to replace them on a biannual basis.

Importing them is a great idea, much cheaper, I was just going off what was available locally!

"you may not need expensive shocks, for your average Joe Koni/Billy may be overkill and unnecessary"

"KYB from Repco at 1/4 the price maybe all you need"

- This is a myth Koni and Bilstien are not expensive

- KYB are cheap and dont last and not 1/4 the price

I agree, but I am a race driver and like going fast, some people just want to drive down Queen Street cranking "Ice Cube" and pulling mean bitches, most don't drive half the speed that the spendy socks start working!

They were when I priced them retail a couple of years back, KYB's were under $200 each from Repco, the Bilstiens were over $800 each from Suspension Tech.

How much are Koni's for the E30 then?? I wanted some Koni Yellows for my Rally car but Stocks want $1840+GST for the pair, thats not toooo farr off the cost of a set of KW V3's.
