Z3 Power steering rack

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a Z3 pwer steering rack available at a reasonable price <$400 or there abouts.

By replacing the one on my E36 with a Z3 rack my E30 can inherit a e36 rack to replace its current leaking rack. Upgrades all round :)

Cheer

Matt

I have E46 Compact racks for $450

These give a great feel/response in a E36 or E30 and are a direct fit. (with steering linkage mod in an E30)

There are 3 different ratios the E36 cars came equipped with. All non-M 3-series coupes and sedans (92-98) came with a 3.2-turn lock-to-lock rack. 95 M3 had a 3.0-turn lock-lock rack which quickens when the steering angle is 200+ degrees but is the slowest rack for the E36 (built to be speed sensitive; slower at lower speeds). EVO M3s and MZ3s (96+) had a 3.2 ratio rack as well.

Different racks specs: measured in (mm/rev); mm of linear racks movement (left or right) per steering wheel revolution:

- M3 3.0 - 39 mm/rev - the slowest available rack. This is a variable ratio but it is slower than standard until 200 deg hand wheel angle

- M3 3.2 and standard E36 - 45.5 mm/rev - the M3 3.2 rack has restricted lock.

- Z3 rack - 53.5 mm/rev - by far the quickest rack you can fit.

- E46 compact rack - 50 mm/rev - the next quickest

Expect to pay at least $750 for a Z3 rack. Any less is a bargin.
