E30 Blower motor issues

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

In my FL 318i, the blower motor decided to bite it, and started making rubbing whirly noises when spinning.

Pulled it out today, gave it a bit of CRC to loosen it up, put it all back in, but doesn't spin on 1 (Spins fine on 2,3,4)

Is it my motor? Or might there be an issue with the resistor?

Mine looks the same as the one is this thread: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=816093

Thanks

could be the resistor. or could be there are some fuses on the side of the heater box that could have blown when it seized up. cant remember what side they are on in the E30 been a while since i been behind the dash now. unlikely to be the switch

Pulled out the resistor, it was hiding under the dash. Mine looks like this: Posted Image

It was looking a bit worse for wear, so will need a new one. Any recommendations of where to get one?

But aside from that, while running the fan on max without the resistor, it was varying in speed.

Checked the connectors, and sanded back the terminals, but still doing it.

Connected it straight to the battery, did the same thing...

Does that mean the motor is on its way out also?

shouldn't be making any noises when its on other than of course airflow. on 1 and 2 settings you really shouldnt be able to hear anything even with stereo off.

I had it running on 1, no worries there, could barely hear it.

No issues on 2 either.

Cheers guys, managed to get a replacement resistor.

Chucked it in, and nothing happened <_<

After a bit of fiddling... I managed to get it going for a bit, then it stops

Running with the heater on Max, and the Fan on 3, I see the resistor coil heating up, almost the whole coil turns red hot, then it clicks off.

-After it cools down, it works again, and does the same thing

I'm assuming its some sort of safety feature?

Does this mean that my blower motor is drawing too much and needs replacing?

EDIT:

Found this thread, http://bmwe30network.net/forums/read.php?3,8221 seems my assumption is correct, so I'm after a new blower motor.

Current one has BOSCH 0130063031 stamped on it, which makes it BMW Part #64111370930?

Anyone got a new one?

Thanks

Yes the resistor has a built in thermal switch to shut it off if it gets too hot.

Motor is prob drawing too much current, easyier to just replace it than f around trying to fix it.

Wow that was quick, was in the middle of editing that post.

So yeah, after a new blower motor if anyone has one that suits.
