lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 I'm toying with the idea of importing a parts car(or maybe compliable next year) E34/E39 diesel with a really good engine. the only issue is, the car will probably come from UK and the shipment will be more than the car's worth! What would be a good option to go diesel with these cars? Or should I just shelve that idea and keep on hunting for a E61 diesel?

antil33t 90 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 (edited) I think someone on here may still have a 325tds set up that he was planning on putting into an E34... Personally I think an M52B28 or an M50 Stroker would be ideal for an E34. As tourings never came with M30's I don't think I would go down that road. lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 ^ that would have been lance.... not sure if he would have wanted to sell the block. but an M52 eh? .... I am sure there are a few e39 528iS that are cheap enough to be stripped down to naught,

Phil-540i 166 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 90s diesels were terrible! Guaranteed to make the car worse. I'd be looking around for an s50 personally Yea, ok, the new diesels are great, when all is good in the world........but feed it some dirty diesel, or have 'Mum' (or Darren's S.I.L.) give it petrol instead of diesel, and suddenly its not so 'cheap' anymore...that's without RUC's & the extra cost of diesel rego....... In the case of one of my new diesel vehicles (a 07 ute..), I'd had such a gutsful of poor running & 'computer reflashes' that didn't work, that the last time it came out of dealer's workshop @ 11 months old, it went straight onto trademe in a fit of 'You are the weakest link - GOOD-BYE.......' V12 it like Andy, & you're probably already ahead on running costs & power........
Allanw 1071 Report post Posted September 4, 2013 .that's without RUC's & the extra cost of diesel rego..... yeah... plus the AA's latest figures (based on new cars up to 5 years old) actually still put petrols as cheaper to own in most cases (If they took out depreciation and the likes, the only diesels that worked out slightly cheaper in the first 5 years, were the 4.0 plus engines, and even that was marginal). Plus they didn't factor in the initial extra cost (other than in the depreciation). The later diesels, such a the e39 530d are pretty impressive though, performance wise - lots of torque. I just got a new VW Transporter 2.0 Bi-Turbo for a work trolley, and it is pretty impressive too... though economy isn't remarkable - only has 40 kms on so far, so should improve as it loosens up. It's also quieter than the petrol Mitsi Outlanders some of the others have just got, and quicker than the 3.0 Toyotas (though they're close, as mine is 4WD with a HIGH roof... the van is 2.5 metres tall
