Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 I looked at this trademe listing. As I am looking for a *30D for towing. Really nice car in Motorsport form. But what can I expect to start need replacing at these KM's? Motor will go forever but what about the rest of her?
E30-323ti 66 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 Friend has one that reads almost the same but with ~220km and black. So far he hasn't had any prob's, just continued with routine maintenance, and has done the 'swirl flap' delete on it. He also has a E46 330d 6spd (Motorsport) same deal. lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 was under the impression that the '05 didn't really need a swirl flap delete?
Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) What engine is in that? Edit. It is the M57TUD30. So it does have flaps. M47 engine(136bhp non common rail vp44 injection pump) DO NOT HAVE swirl flapsM47N common rail engine (including M47N/M47TU/M47TUD20)(150bhp face lift model August-September 2001 onwards) has flapsM57 engines(M57D)(525d & 187bhp 330d) have no swirl flaps on the manual cars BUT AUTOMATICS DOM57N engines(M57TUD)(525d & 330d 204bhp) have swirl flaps both manual and automaticsBMW 4 cylinders M47 diesels post late 2008 early 2009 are not fitted with swirl flaps anymore, to check your car enter your car chassis number into realoem.com and check your specification, also 6 cylinder N57 diesel engines have a flap control but this is an inline system and not a swirl flap system.. Also have a read. http://www.bmwforums.info/general-guides-how-tos/993-bmw-diesel-engine-swirl-flaps-all-you-ever-ever-need-know-about-swirl-flaps.html The other issue is where the hell would I get the car looked at in bloody Greymouth. And the extra costs of getting it back to Auckland. Bloody broken ferry. Edited February 5, 2014 by driftit
Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Yeah from what I can see the 2005 E60 530D should not have this issue. Also looking at import prices though. UK import as long as you do all the work yourself will be less than $20K inc GST and shipping. Much more of a choice and most have far less KM's. Just depends if they meet the current Euro Diesel standard and if you want to take the risk with surface corrosion etc.... Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 There is actually a nice 530D M Touring on TM too. 209,000kms though. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-683410889.htm
Phil-540i 166 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 Its probably not bad buying at that price, but beer (yes, theres been a couple......) in mind that anything from that side of the island / alps traditionally gets a super hard time from the environment..............like, its gotta be seen to be believed at times IMO........... Eagle 1662 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 I honestly don't think i could live with E60 interior design no matter how good the car is.
lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 gjm, that has been listed for a while now, started at 22k ....
gjm 3258 Report post Posted February 5, 2014 It's relatively easy to check if it has swirl flaps , (which by the way is a misnomer). Just remove the top engine trim and look for them, it s that easy. Despite some claims that all M57 n models are fitted with said devices , mine does not have them and Real OEM does not list a manifold with flap control for mine either . However it is an X5 and it is Manual. The so called swirl flap is more appropriately called a velocity flap. At low engine speed it effectively closes the short inlet tract to one inlet valve , leaving only one long tract to fill the cylinder via the other inlet valve. This increases air velocity improving cylinder filling. The swirl is introduced when both tracts are operating due to the different tract lengths and the fact that the port alignment is different for each valve so the air enters the cylinder at different speeds and angles - really quite smart. Nice description. This also explains why a car which has had the swirl flaps removed can feel a little sluggish (comparatively) off the line.

ashmill 68 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 Dan. Shuey bought an 05 530d M'Sport with 178,000 and it goes like a rocket. Towed his race car to Taupo and back no problems. They are a great car, but then I would say that!!!! Mine is something else again in the performance stakes as I had it remapped in the UK before importing. The performance I staggering for a diesel. Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 (edited) Going to go and have a look at the Touring today if I can. Has been listed a while. So has the one in Greymouth. I will be getting it checked by one of the 1000 odd BMW specialists on the shore here. Been looking at E90 330D's too but found that so many of the ones being sold at realistic prices here are Grandad spec. Make sure that option book has NO TICKS!!. I want something that looks good and has a few options. I have browsed that one you posted Jon. But that horrendous colour. I just can't do it. Nor can I bring myself to look at the Blue one in Tokoroa with the disgusting beige interior. Been there done that with my E39. lord_jagganath 421 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 the options list for NZ New cars tend to be lean as 90% of them were exec cars... that seems to be my experience thus far.
jonesrp 63 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 yup...them old swirl flap issues with the diesels...or the subframe issues with the E46`s...and don`t start about the front wheel shimmies on the E39. It`s a wonder any of our cars sell at all. Ho Ho...if you like it, buy it. And then enjoy it.

E30 325i Rag-Top 2957 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 My E46 330d pulls like a schoolboy when towing, but I found it a little bit light when towing my 1100kg E30 race car on a hirepool 600kg trailer. It felt a little bit 'pushy' on downhills and tight corners. The 530d would have the same (if not more) pull and feel a bit more planted on the road due to the larger size and a bit more weight. Not a bad looking car in m-sport guise. There's an ex-demo F31 330d xDrive on at Clayton's at the moment if you are feeling very flush, and that thing is an absolute rocket. Will have lots of 'options' fitted as it's NZ new!!
Driftit 2078 Report post Posted February 6, 2014 F10 is a bit out of reach if I want to keep racing. I am finding all the NZ new cars have nearly nothing extra. All the e90s I have looked at don't have idrive and none are motorsports. Grandpa spec. Horrible colour combinations. I really need to stop looking at autotrader.co.uk . There is so much choice.
