I think $30K is fair for what it is but you're right, it will be an enthusiast that pays that for a 14 year old car and may take a while to come along. Probably doesn't help that most of us know what you paid for it ;)

Great car though, and it would be mine in a heartbeat if I had the coin.

I think it's a case of the pool of potential buyers being tiny. Very few people are going to pay $30K for a 14 year old car, as amazing a piece of engineering it is - especially in this country where people see older European cars as unreliable moneypits. For perspective, you can buy a very highly specified 2002 E39 M5 in the UK for about 8,000 quid / $16,000, which is peanuts, but again people are having trouble selling them unless to an enthusiast. Just the way it goes unfortunately. $30K will also get you a decent brand new car these days, and as much as I love my E90 335i, at times part of me would rather own one of those worry free little numbers!!

Dave why not just keep it? These cars are proven to do big mileage so long as you keep on top of maintenance. Your resale value is already affected due to age. Low kms although important to most, is not the holy grail for enthusiasts. It's in immaculate condition!

I agree. Unless there's a compelling reason to sell, I'd keep it. It's a rare car with genuine pedigree and it's something we would all love to own. Find a way to hang on to it even if it means buying a clapped out Pulsar to get you from A to B.

this is pretty much my thinking.

I couldn't get anything close to the grin factor my M5 gives me for what I could sell it for. So I'm not.

Nothing's wrong with it. Preventative maintenance is the key.

Every year (besides normal services) I undertake a new project to upgrade or replace something that I know might be an issue in the future.

This year is a new cooling system.

Oh. And it's not a $200k car to service. Seriously. It's not that bad as long as you have a good base to start with.

Turner Motorsport is a great place to buy. Makes local prices for genuine parts just come across as obscene and designed for people who don't know that there are other places to look. It's a given that BMW ownership is going to be a little more pricey than owning a more mainstream car, but it's usually worth it. Now that there are independent specialists out there that is a big help. My DSC pump on the 335i needs to be replaced - $2,500 just for the part from BMW, or $450+GST to have mine rebuilt by Burger's Motorworks with a recognised rebuild kit commonly used in the UK. $2K + main dealer labour costs is a big price difference

this is pretty much my path also.

I buy OEM or better parts & import them myself. Take them down to the my local BMW dealer for installation. Everything is handbook service. The BMW service department, to their credit, are actually pretty cool with me doing this.

I'll be picking up that overhaul package later this year.

If the new client in Waiuku is the steel mill i'm pretty sure i wouldnt be driving anything worth more than $5k out there... The place seems to eat cars.

It's a combination of things really. For the first time in 8 years I am finally down to one car, and loving it, the hassles and time of owning a crappy daily (plus WOFs, Reg, Insurnace) are in the past for me, and I love nothing more than having one reliable and drivable car to use day-to-day. Not to mention the driveway space is running low and its like a game of Tetris some mornings, with two cars this would suck even more.

I'm super glad to have owned this car, even if it has only been for 6 months.

New client in Waiuku isn't the steel mill thankfully!!

A cheeky pay rise at work a couple months ago has helped too, so will be upgrading to a newer and lower km car, probably this week if all goes well.

Because of this, will be willing to take $29,000 this week (for bimmersport members). Since buying the car I have had a new set of tyres go on the car, as well as a service at Team Mcmillian which is happening this week prior to sale. Basically am looking to break even, still an incredible price for such an epic machine.

Hmmm, one of the guys on my shift has been using his E39 528i as his daily for three years now. Weekly wash & wax is keeping it looking pretty good. Seems its the ones that park right outside the plants (bosses) that get it the worst (haha!) :) Just stay away from the local carwash unless you like the 'scoured' look :D

Your pricing is inline/good compared to other E39 M5s, but when a E60 M5 (along with its newer engine, chassis, lower mileage and wear etc) is only $9k more you have to consider maybe all the E39 M5s are overpriced and none are really shifting.

^ hardly, it will be an enthusiast who buys the E39. whereas it is possible that it is not necessarily true for the E60 m5.

At $39k asking vs $30k asking, there is no longer that much in them to make that statement true, unless you think inherently the E60 M5 is not enthusiasm worthy?

I, like many others, would run scared of a high mileage cheap E60 M5.

Great but virtually all the E60 M5s up on TM at the moment have lower mileage than the E39 M5 in this thread. One of them only has 64k on it!

They arent "cheap", they are worth $38 to 40k, thats it. Which put pressure on the E39 M5.. which is the problem the seller is seeing.

I bet the E60 M5's dont sell in a hurry either, them being priced closed to the E39 tells you everything.

For me it just comes down to who wanting which car at the time, most enthusiasts would take the E39.
