VDSL Modem recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

we just got VDSL from Slingshot a few days ago, but the provided modem router is quite shitty, disconnecting every few hours.

I wonder f I could replace it with a better modem router NAS package?

if so would anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

I would be asking for a replacement first. Disconnection every few hours is a warranty return surely?

Hi,

My kind of question haha. Head on over to www.geekzone.co.nz.

Otherwise a Fritz Box 7340 or 7390 will sort you out. The modem supplied by Slingshit will ruin your VDSL profile. So you probably heard what DLM is.

I have a HG659 at home here and a Fritzbox 7390. If you wanted to buy the HG659 it would be around $90 on trademe.

Cheers

yeah, DLM is what I am concerned about.

My old Slingshot provided router was a Netcomm but probably isn't a VDSL modem.

I have already contacted slingshot, via FB and their site contact form. here's hoping they would help me out.

Edit: ah NF4V ? http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?z=p&p=MODNCM1054 not too bad. the board may be identical to the energy imports one as the ports are all in the same place.

also Fritz, who distributes them here Tim?

They are $300 plus from Snap. Woosh brings them in NZ.

You can grab a good one for $150 on trademe. Get a draytek from PB tech.

I'd be looking at the VDSL modem stats before swapping out. You maybe having line quality issues causing restarts.

You should be able to log in to the modem . Check the error stats and if your seeing Crc errors or fcs errors my bet would be the copper connection or the line card between the house and the exchange.

Just put your current one on bridge mode and get a router to do the pppoe connection.

Can be any router able to do pppoe with a vlan tag. Can also be a linux box if you like it that way.

Mikrotiks are very good for cheap routers. But they require a bit of configuration, not very plug and play like the standard routers. You can buy them frokm gowifi.co.nz if you want to have a look.

Like M3AN said, much more flexible and reliable.

Check out the net gear range . For around $200 you'll get a 10/100/1000 switch with the latest 802.11ac wireless spec. Usb sharing / dlna with vdsl2 support. It's quality stuff for the price and simple to configure .

I use their brand of power line Ethernet 10/100/1000 extenders

Call up Slingshot and get them to put a 24 hour monitor on the line. Then make a note of everytime it dropped so you can compare notes with them.

Does it still drop when you are using an ethernet cable? I assume they installed a splitter when you went to VDSL

7.24pm 30/03/14
9.12pm 30/03/14
9.59pm 30/03/14

firmware must be buggy to have those dates revert to 1-1-1970?

Hey the vb104w was free with the package right? ;)

She has a few bugs to be addressed. You should have had one connected using the first fw version haha...

If you want German quality, get a Fritz box.

Nothing useful in that syslog. You need to look at the dsl stats, check for SES (severely errored seconds) or screen shot it here. What's your sync speeds like?

You get what you pay for with cpe.
