Guest Andrew Report post Posted February 14, 2006 I'm getting annoyed with BMWs apparent lack of a standard for diff ratio labelling. Of all the diffs i've seen recently (from pre-fls) they have Input pinion gear numbers vs ring gear numbers. (i.e 40 11) written on them giving 3.63:1 And then some times you get a plain 3.63 1 on the etc etc. Keen to here what some F/L cars have.
Carl 3 Report post Posted February 14, 2006 I've had a 4 45 1, 3 46 1, and a 3 25 1, all small case. Currently have a medium case 40 11 in there and have seen a 43 11 tag somewhere on another medium case.
E30stz 0 Report post Posted February 15, 2006 (edited) I'm a little confused as to exactly where on the diff it is labelled. From what I can make out the two codes I've got are 1210423 and AES966640 Anyone care to arrow it for me. Edited February 15, 2006 by E30stz
bravo 35 Report post Posted February 15, 2006 Aparently the tag is riveted on (mine isn't) Where yours says 1210423 Andy mine says 1210421 I also have a 13 18 11, and a GGG 40 where yours has something similar.
Carl 3 Report post Posted February 15, 2006 (edited) The tag is bolted on the back plate of the diff, towards the left, usually a little thin metal strip ~1-2 cm wide. It will have a few numbers and letter(s) on it and it may need a clean or scrub before the characters actually become visible. E: Andy, you would see it in the left of the left pic but I can't see it so can't arrow it. Edited February 15, 2006 by Carl

Does your diff look like that graham?
bravo 35 Report post Posted February 15, 2006 No, mine is similar yet different {like Canadin Club}. Less sqaureish I think but it is hard to tell from photos.

Guest Andrew Report post Posted February 15, 2006 So - the diff I posted (mine) is a medium case diff. What Andy posted is a small case diff. So if you can work out the ratio on your diff Graham we should be able to solve both out ratio issues. ON a side note - finally managed to get stickers on with no bubbles - soapy water is the win - it just takes ages! ( i love being unemployed hah)
bravo 35 Report post Posted February 16, 2006 Yeah - I've been house sitting for 2 weeks and the car has been at home. Going home tonight so I'll jack it up. Hate those bubbles - don't need soap tho = just water. Tinted my mates VL the other day - car looks like arse but there were a few beers in it, so schmeh. Lots of water is definately the win. Tint's look phat if you manage to not look at the car and its got an rb30 so that's another saving grace...

E30stz 0 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 the thing is .. with E30's there is alot of different ones aruond on the same model of cars. So its possible it might not be what it specifies in the manufacturers description.
Carl 3 Report post Posted February 28, 2006 i got 427 368 I believe on mine.. maybe thats 3:63 ? thats on the 320i. That's more likely to be the 4:27 diff (4:11, 4:27, 4:45)
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted March 7, 2006 Have had a hunt on the convertible and can't find the tag, mind you haven't been able to get under it very far. Tried Real OEM, gave me some details on the car, but couldn't figure out how to suss the diff. Will check the other car shortly. Question. What is the electrical connector that attaches to the rear of the diff as shown in Andrews photo and found on the convertible? Speed sensor?
bumpstop325 0 Report post Posted March 7, 2006 3.64S same, but mine is 45.11S
Guest Andrew Report post Posted March 7, 2006 Speed sensor? yep
Palazzo 477 Report post Posted March 8, 2006 Thanks Andrew, so next question. Why does the convertible have one and the 325iM not.?Has the plug, but seems to have been blanked off, certainly no wiring. Can't read the actual tag until I get under it with some degreaser and a brush.
