Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 Below are the Lap times for various cars tested by Car and Driver Magazine from 2006 to 2015. The track is Virginia international Raceway and the track is 4.1 miles long. Some very interesting lap times and some suposedly fast cars that perhaps are not quite so fast as we may think. The coloured blocks relate to where Car & Driver put them based on their category, price etc. 1 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder 2:43.1 2 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2:44.6 3 2015 McLaren 650S Spider 2:45.8 4 Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 Some 2016 Lap times, The new Camaro SS 1LE did it in 2.54 and the 1LE V6 did it in 3.04, the M4 GTS did it in 2.53. The Mustang GT350 2.52, BMW M2 3.01, Ferrari 488 GTB 2.45.
Matth5 471 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 "BMW 335i coupe" has a 3 sec faster time than the 335is and 135i? 335is is the US model 335i with performance power kit, some unique body bits, and came with DCT - only way Americans could get DCT on the 335i. No way it's slower. They must have had a slower driver or worse conditions, look how close the Golf GTI's time is to them
Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 (edited) The US is hot perhaps the 335is was heat affected, pulled timing etc. Day it was tested could have been a lot warmer. The N54 is not heat tolerant for long lap stints. Edit just noticed the 335is was 2012 so probably an N55. It could have been tyres? It's a big track and small things make big differences on big tracks. Edited June 4, 2017 by Herbmiester
Matth5 471 Report post Posted June 4, 2017 (edited) 335is in the US was N54 only. Yep true heat is likely. Don't think the car tells you right away that it's pulling timing from heat so they probably didn't know. Edited June 4, 2017 by Matth5
Driftit 2078 Report post Posted June 5, 2017 It's an amazing track. The vehicles that turn up there for standard track days are jaw dropping. The International part of its name would be due to the quality of the facility. It is of a very high standard. Hosts some very big races here. Lots of international names.
Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 5, 2017 (edited) While lap times will vary day to day it is still useful to judge where cars sit in the big scheme of things. Also you will see that some cars were tested in the same year that means they were tested at the same time as this is based on an annual event. Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 5, 2017 I find it quite interesting just how quick the Nissan GTR's are. For such a big heavy car they can set some pretty spectacular lap times. Also the Camaro Z28 's is quite outstanding, sure it has a 7l engine and 305 tyres up front but for a car that based on the Holden Commodore it moves. zero 1162 Report post Posted June 5, 2017 The american cars have come a long way in the handling stakes in the last few years.
Herbmiester 925 Report post Posted June 5, 2017 (edited) 17 minutes ago, zero said: The american cars have come a long way in the handling stakes in the last few years. Personally I think this is good as it puts the established sports/performance car makers on notice. It will of course struggle to erode the brand cachet that European manufacturers have. However the good thing about the Euro manufacturers is the emergence of more affordable performance cars, M2, CLA and RS3. I think we are in such a great time for affordably quick cars especially in NZ as we can get second hand 335is for $20K, Nissan GTRS for 70k and 996 911's for less than 40k. kwhelan 241 Report post Posted June 11, 2017 it amazes me how easily little cars can match the bigger when the track is only 59s long, on the longer track with higher speed on straights the difference is bigger and how much white knuckle ringing it took. Watching cars on top gear track its hard to predict what a fast lap is to another, some look fast and some look effortless and then the times can tell another story. Some of the car makers must be right royally annoyed at the times due to temperatures and weather. for the aus times a better test would be what state the cars would be in after say 4 laps, have brakes gone, engines overheating, I'm sure theres a bigger difference and I'd expect the GTR to be built to do it all day. A buyer wants to know that surely
