M3_Power 636 Report post Posted January 31, 2018 Just wondering if you guys think there’s a market for an intake like this? Not an expert in the 2 litre M54 motor or how easy it would be to make one work on a stock motor - thoughts and inputs!

Young Thrash Driver 1020 Report post Posted January 31, 2018 I'd say there is a market- depending on the cost per unit. Ron is likely correct about the WTCC rules, but people spent years putting M50 intake mani's onto their M52's, so f**k logic and yay carbon intake! It won't even have to make more power, the placebo effect (and bling factor) alone will sell it.
E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted February 1, 2018 Yup, lots of M5x engines being used in the BMW 2 Litre Championships which would probably benefit from a plenum designed for the 2 Ltr WTCCs. Plus would look tits and sound orgasmic, both big plusses. All comes down to $$$s at the end of the day, which I know will depend on how many you can sell.. chicken and egg. Ball park figure?

I suspect it will be sub optimal on a road/ track car and larger capacities? Correct it is off the WTCC 2 litre e46 touring cars. I believe these made about 265hp? Having actually witnessed this plenum run on a M54B30 touring car that put out 300hp at the dyno I would say it’s actually still optimal to flow for larger capacity motors. You can I believe get different sized throttle bodies for these. I honestly don’t know enough about it to be honest. 8 hours ago, Young Thrash Driver said: I'd say there is a market- depending on the cost per unit. No idea hence I am asking if it is even worth investigating or how easy it’d be to make work on a road car : ) maybe I’ll grab a cheap 320i and give it a go !!! It sounds freaking awesome these plenums.
M3_Power 636 Report post Posted February 1, 2018 Nothing is cheap when it is bmw motorsport. I guess that’s also why nothing remotely close is available to the market that resembles it. That one you linked to is a later version and for a different series and motorsport made them in Silver carbon in the last reiteration which made 285hp I believe from the 2 litres. For some noise porn : )
zero 1162 Report post Posted February 2, 2018 I did not realise there was a 2 litre m54? Or was it a 2.2 litre "de-stroked" to 2.0 litre to meet regulations?
Herbmiester 923 Report post Posted February 3, 2018 To be fair the M54 does not offer great potential anyway and if you want to buzz it at high RPM regularly you better pay some attention to the oil pump.
M3_Power 636 Report post Posted February 3, 2018 Starting to sound like the answer to my question is in the negative lol!! Thanks for all the feedback and comments! Didn’t the P54B20 rev to 9000rpm or more?

Herbmiester 923 Report post Posted February 5, 2018 On 03/02/2018 at 10:04 PM, 3pedals said: On the contrary the M54 is a very sound base to start with in 3 litre iterations it can spin out about 265kW to 285 kW in normally aspirated form at about 8,400 RPM That will take a lot of money to achieve, if you are trying to get there naturally aspirated. Intake, exhaust, cams, valve springs and perhaps new pistons. The head may need work as well. Not what I would call easily tuneable. Also as mentioned you will have to do something about the oil pump to stop it failing. To me thats an engine out job. Probably cheaper to bolt on a supercharger. M3_Power 636 Report post Posted February 5, 2018 I’ve personally seen a M54B30 motor with cams and no vanos and stock bottom end with this intake make 300hp at the hubs on a Motec ... so it wasn’t really huge money ... as to how long it lasted ... probably not that long lol!! Herbmiester 923 Report post Posted February 5, 2018 Cams are not cheap, regrinding the originals is not recommended and schrick cams are pretty expensive. fitting them is not for everyone and while I dont doubt the engine made 300hp I wonder what else was done, headers I assume and a retune of the ECU all that could easily cost 3k or more. The fact is that if the M54 was easily tunable for noticable HP everyone would do it. It's not like an N54 where picking up big HP and torque is child's play. Herbmiester 923 Report post Posted February 5, 2018 Also 300hp is not 360-380 HP as Ron mentioned.

That sounds like huge money and then the oil pump shaft snaps lol
