e46v12 477 Report post Posted March 3, 2019 Hey Everyone So over the weekend manged to get my daily back up and running Man what a night a day difference it is, the gear chatter that i did have mainly due to loose friction plate is pretty much gone. Clutch pedal feels a little stiffer which i dont mind at all. But just in general the whole motor feels and runs abit more smoother now. Also managed to change out the broken 2 o2 sensors in the e46 coupe and taken the bonnet and bumper off for painters next week. drives shafts were originally same length but due to the adapter plate, i had shorten the old drive shaft. But used the front half of the 530i shaft as it was the longer piece but good as it was beefier had to swap shifters out too due to length differences. e46v12 477 Report post Posted May 4, 2019 (edited) Hey Team Very long time no post. alot has happened especially with my other builds and getting the coupe wof ready. It officially sold today In the time that has passed I manged to get the sedan to Gavin for a tune. I wasn't there for it unfortunately as i had to drop it off on a Saturday and return next Saturday to pick up. Very happy with the tune as it runs so much better now. Idles smooth and no more burble! i can't stand that. So the red line is the base tune of M60B44 how the car first came in. Blue line is the final tune figures. Also have got some more work done with the custom 3 piece Hamann wheels, re-drilled holes to match the centres with the barrel. I have one wheel completely cleaned of old paint and now 3 to go. Glad to have found this paint stripper and it works Amazing! Looking at getting the centres powder coated in hyper black and keeping the lips polished. Now the car is tuned and the WOF and REGO is about to finish i will be putting the REGO on hold and taking it off the road to swap all the bushings and arms out with the kit i purchased last year. They look great. 20 hp is an excellent gain, plus some nice gains lower in the rev range. 239hp is a good result when you consider he calls his dyno the 'dream killer', because it records lower compared to others. But my goal wasn't about the final power figure, more so getting the thing to idle and run smoother which its is definitely now. So very happy with the tune. Just been busy with the other builds but here's the plans for these two in the near future. So in the months that have past since May, I had the opportunity to buy this X5 4.6is i purely brought this for the motor as the dream of a s62 motor was bit out of reach for me, this was the next best thing. Also score this deal with Brents old 530i with b44 manual swap. Due till rust in the bottom sills and just a tad rough on the out side, I am taking all the running gear and already have sold on the rolling body. The 530i is currently at Austin @Stirling Street Machines and Fabrication getting a set of custom headers made. Pictures to come when done. Also perfect timing as i have some how broken the zf box currently in the sedan so the one from Brent's old one will be going in. Also swapped my set of style 66 plus abit of cash for a genuine set of style 37 Mpars which will be going on the sedan. Also scored these for the wagon some style 5's, a bit of polishing will bring them up nicely. So the main things happening soon are to do with the Wagon. So i plan to take the 4.6 motor out of the X5 with all engine loom and dme, bolt up a 420g box that i have, utilize Brent's single mass flywheel from the red 530i. Bolt the new headers up which hopefully will be a straight bolt in and get retuned if need be by Gavin. Cant wait to get this thing going as the 4.6 is such a different beast to the 4.4, just seems so much more grunter. Oh so dad also said he really like the x5 4.6 and it is in such good nick, it be a waste to part it so have managed to score a very low km x5 4.4 with broken trans that i will swap the motor over into the 4.6 x5 body. big swaps happening ahead, cant wait Thanks team. BM WORLD 1286 Report post Posted September 2, 2019 (edited) haha good score on the old 544i , typical ex UK car rust that flywheel is really only suitable for a 5spd box , small clutch is really only like a 330i 328i 3l m3 240mm type , clutch spline wont suit the 420g larger spline . but maybe you could get a stronger clutch set up to fit from maybe a e46 m3 or e36 3.2l m3 etc?? yea those x5 4.6is are so much better than the 4.4i i have both and the 4.6is is way faster and sounds amazing ps got plenty of pics of that red 530i if you need Edited September 2, 2019 by BM WORLD 1 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
e46v12 477 Report post Posted September 3, 2019 (edited) @treone haha i was seriously contemplating this, did a bit of online research and some guy in Russia has custom made a trafer case to fit a 420g box to keep it AWD, i thought about as it and wouldnt be too hard to make RWD but feel the X5 are big and heavy with the AWD helps it out a lot. @qube I sure have, i really need to just focus on one project though, this is getting a bit crazy, I dont have enough space. @BM WORLD Yes your correct i would need a bigger spline clutch disc, would look at getting the 240mm m5 ones that come out behind the s62 or aftermarket one from speedfactor. if you got more picture yeah send them my way Also another small update, so spent today during my breaks sorting the window issue and it was just the window had popped off the bolt that holds it in so wasn't getting pushed up. Thats all fixed now and i took it for a good spin and can't find anything wrong with the gearbox, which i was told would go into limp mode on downshifts. So yeah pretty much have a mint running X5 4.4 that ill be getting a wof tomorrow. It has a better head unit in it with reverse camera, so ill just pass this one on to the parents and just need to strip the one car AND look what Austin just sent me a picture of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A cosmos one that was sold with mpars, now running a 420g and schnitzers. And this. Bought this car standard from an old guy on the kapiti coast, tidied it up and lowered it. Dismantle what i wanted from the car and managed to jack up a deal with Austins cousin thats also has a few e34's he's restoring, so onsold the body to him and paid the difference to Austin for the set of exhaust manifolds. Austin doing some final mock up with the headers, they were very snug against the driverside of the gearbox, we had to shave a bit off the side of the box to leave 2-3mm gap. Also sorted some tyres for the Mpars I did a quick test fit on one side of the car to see what they looked like. Nice sunny day for a photo. so finally got these Hamann custom 3 piece wheels ready to piece back together. sent it away to get dustless blasted as i just didnt have time to use my small sand blaster. so spent yesterday and today cleaning, polishing and painting the wheel barrels, also had the centres powder coated. e46v12 477 Report post Posted January 11, 2020 (edited) Hey Team Long time no post, well Happy new years I cant believe we are already 11 days in. so have had a few things going on that werent really related to this build but still bimmer related. Me and Conrad coverted this to manual and flicked it off to help get some more funds for these other builds. Also managed to get these wheels all finished up and bolted together. So i measured the offset and the fronts are et0 and the rears are et-5 so i tried them on the e34 sedan and there is no way they will fit under the guards sad to say they will be going onto the m3 instead now. But good news now is i'm starting the next stage of the m62tub46 motor swap into the wagon. I will be taking the motor out of the car and replacing alot of parts, but also reusing the auto trans and placing it into the silver x5 that had a broken trans. I'll be giving that ride to my parents to use. But the exciting part is I will be reusing the 4.6is x5 body and swapping in a 4.4 motor with a 420g box behind it. So hopfully have a rwd 6 speed x5 So with the flywheel i got from brents old red e34 car. Its a single mass JBR lighten flywheel, the game plan is I'm getting MP Auto in Upper Hutt to make 2 more custom flywheels using the 2 auto ring gears as you can see, pretty much copy the JBR one but machining the pressure plate side of the flywheel to accept a Nissan RB pressure plate. Reason behind this is to have a cheaper better alternative clutch kit set up. Better clamp force with the RB pressure plate and bigger 250mm friction surface than the bmw 240mm. Greg at MP auto will also be reusing the 2 x m3 centres out of the friction plates and mate them with a RB outer disc. You may be wondering why 2 flywheels? Manged to get both autos out of the blue and silver x5's and refitting the silver one with the good trans. Shes up and running now like a dream, while i wait for the flywheel and clutch kit to get back to start the rest of the manual swap for the blue x5. I will be pulling the motor out at some point to replaces the timing chain guides and any other seals that need replacing. e46v12 477 Report post Posted February 23, 2020 Hey Team so finally got onto the e34 sedan and changing the bushings and other componets. Once i had the car lifted I had a good look around. The rear bushings were definietly in need of replacing but the fronts are still pretty tight with next to no play so decided to leave the front and attack the rear. You tube is a great thing. watched this Aussie guy demostrate how to do a backyard bushing replacement with out a press and worked a treat. place a tube aproxment size of bushing, place it on top and use the weight of the car plus a blow tourch to drop the busing out. Reuse the weight of the car to reinstall bushing. Also changed the dog bones and swap bar links, as you can see the old dog bones were wasted. Next step I will be refitting the Monroe shocks and H&R springs then putting her on the market with fresh WOF and REGO Time to let her go to fund the other projects. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

So got into the front end of the e34 sedan, i was only going to swap the adjusties out but at a closer inspection the thrust arms were split so deicded to just change the whole front bushings out. It was abit tricky trying to figure out how to split the ball joints off the bracket piece that held everthing together as there was heaps of movement when i was going to town on it with a hammer. Once all off just eye balled the new steering links to roughly the same length as old one and bolted it all back together. Taking it in for a wheel alignment and WOF tomorrow then if all good to go onto trade me its going. But the best part of the weekend was picking up these Got the 2 x custom flywheel and clutch packages back. Now hopfully will start getting in the x5 4.6is manual swap! Bit of info on the set up. M62 auto ring gear machined steel flywheel to accept nissan pressure plate (still need to weight it) 3000lb nissan pressure plate Custom 5 puk disc with m3 centre spline Custom release bearing carrier to accept nissan release bearing. So the reason behind this was to make an affordable upgrade able to source from NZ. Friction surface is bigger by 10mm at 250mm compared to bmw 240mm clutches used in the m3/m5 and the release bearing is only $40 to replace which gets pressed into the carrier. Greg at MP Auto said with his tourqe calculator he roughly worked out that this setup could handle 800nm which is more than enough for me. So cant wait to starting fitting this up to the X5.
