2006 BMW 130i water pump options

Recommended Posts

I think my water pump has died....

Does anyone know what my options are for a replacement? I will call BMW but also want to consider overseas, etc - just want to avoid anything that's a chinese knock-off and not sure I'd be able to tell the difference (!) so feel free to throw me reliable sources.

Will replace the thermostat at the same time.

Thanks all

FCP Euro the whole kit, with fluid and thermostat and bolts (Pierburg is solid). Cant go wrong, its not a difficult job either.

It wouldnt be a bad idea to replace the plastic fitting next to the  oil cooler with an ali one while you're there, Ive seen a bunch breaking recently and you want to do it with the cooling system drained.

When do ya reckon it's best to do this? There is no schedule for the 130i. Anyone have the schedule for the E90 330i? Or is that the same?

I'm getting close to 100k.

Most yanks seem to do it around 100k miles. Not KM's.

The waterpump? When it starts throwing errors. They normally cough out a few spurious errors before dying. Mine did 230,000km before throwing an intermittent canbus coms error. Some die at 40,000km, some at 300,000.

The motor is brushless, the whole thing is cooled and lubed by the coolant itself (wet rotor), so provided coolant is regularly changed they dont really wear as such.. (and its not swimming in green supercheap crap) its more likely heat cycles on the speedcontroller FETs etc that kill em.

Ah right. Time for a coolant change for summer anyway. Will just keep that up.

Mine lasted 124k. No warning, just amber then red within 100 meters of road. Apparently bleeding them can bring on failure quicker according to the bmw specialist.

indeed, Pierberg is the OE Manufacturer.  Also for the auxilliary coolant pump on e60 545i.

Just for sh!ts and giggles, any thoughts on the cheaper alternatives - can they really be that bad?

I have located (in $NZD) on Amazon...

MOSTPLUS pump $280 (Pierberg $461)

TOPAZ thermostat $33.99 (Mahle $100)

Meanwhile in NZ...

Pierburg pump $570/$600/$700 (depending on where you shop)

Nobrand thermostat $125 (BEHR $160)

The winner - 'TrueFlow' $965 (this is on tardme from Australian seller - the dearest price I found and it's an ebay pump!)
