Introducing Mini-Me, the little red e30 that could

Recommended Posts

This is Barry's @Autoglym “Mini-Me”.  Why Mini-Me?  It’s the little version of his fabulous Zinnoberrot e28 ///M535i!  See the likeness?

e28 ///M535i - August 2017 (unmistakeable likeness)

The short story is it’s done ~250k kms, originally from Wangvegas.  It was found in a quiet garage, off the beaten track.  A very tidy car, feels like the rear seat has barely been sat in. There are the minor dents and dings of a 30+ year old e30.  It’s running a very slick M42 installation that's had new rings and bearings, and it idles beautifully and goes well.  There's a carefully-built compact header setup that clears the steering and meets with the standard M40 exhaust.  Mini-Me currently runs an auto, and has disc rear end from factory.

Plans are to tidy it up, perhaps a manual conversion, windscreen, and get it certed.  And then enjoy Mini-Me for fun and shows.  e30 Mega Meet, here we come!

First job:  A good go over with Auto Glym and a little elbow grease…

  • Rinse and Bodywork Shampoo to start, with a quick blow-off
  • Auto Glym Clay bar kit,
  • Auto Glym Bodywork Shampoo (briefly),
  • Followed by Auto Glym Super Resin Polish,
  • Auto Glym Clean Wheels,
  • Auto Glym Bumper & Trim Gel,
  • Auto Glym Bumper & Trim Detailer,
  • ... and then finished off with Auto Glym Instant Tyre Shine.  Beautiful!

You might have guessed, Barry is Mr Auto Glym.  Support your fellow Bimmersporter, you can find his products here: https://barrysgarage.co.nz/shop/autoglym-product-categories/

Some upholstery work is being scheduled, and other maintenance items are in the wind.  Watch this space!

One of the great things about this car, is Jim the previous owner, fully reconditioned the M42 motor, made his own, very nice extractors, was his daily for years

Its a very solid, honest example, no rust & a blast to drive, even my wife loves it!!

She has a E46 330 Motorsport convertible!!

I think body-colour mirrors, bumpers, and some foglamps... we just need to set up a paint booth, I'm game for the painting  ?

Wow this car is taking big strides.  I had the pleasure of test-driving it yesterday.  It's transformed since I was with Barry for the original test drive.

It's now got my old 13.5mm rear ARB with genuine BMW ARB bushes (~5 months wear on them - like new!), and Barry put new Lemforder dogbones on.

...and Rear outer brake hoses...

And as Barry has noted, new transmission and motor mounts, LCA bushes, ARB bushes, endlinks, rotors, pads, brake hoses, and a new LH brake hard line.

It's very smooth, gobs more torque at takeoff than my M40B16, it's very willing, and there's no rattle at all from the rebuilt M42B18.  It's got much better composure now than when I first rode in it, with body roll significantly reduced and managed.  It's smooth through the mid-corner bumps, though still feels like a lively dancer as you punt it down the road.  It's really getting sorted!

And that Zinnoberrot paint is looking really smart.

Can't wait to see the next steps in the journey.

The latest update is I have purchased a fibreglass Sun Roof panel, will get it painted, fitted & replace the seal

The existing panel, has rust, as per normal, the only rust in the car, never again, fibreglass rules

I drove Mini-Me to get these photos, it'd been nearly two years since I last drove it.  I know I've said it before, but it's really come further than the last time.  It's a really pleasant place to be, the M42 is great, the auto is sweet - changing down automatically, never hunting, shifting quickly without jerkiness - and easy to drive, the suspension is just right for stock ride height, roll is minimal, brakes are very good... The stereo works well, (showing my my speakers are a bit knackered!), it's a lovely car to drive.

You're reminded you're driving a 34 year-old car that has no rattles or clunks, and is tight and quiet.  You just don't find that in Toyotas with over 200k kms on them.
