Herbmiester 810 Report post Posted March 2 I have just bought an E70 40 with the style 333 20 x 11 20 x 10 wheel combo. These bad boys take the 315 35 x 20 and 275 40 x 20 tires. Just wondering if the ride on 19's is better and whether the tire cost is noticeably lower. What setups have you used?
BM WORLD 1170 Report post Posted March 2 my x5 4.6is runs the same sizes , rides fine , tyres not too bad
3pedals 1068 Report post Posted March 2 You know all the answers to this. Influencing factors Tyre load rating, tread depth, tyre age, brand of tyre all influence the feel of the car I've run, 17's, 18's & 19's on my e53 and the above applies to all My settings: 107 load rating, no more than 4 years old at end of intended life, Conti, Michelin or Pirelli Some newer tyres have higher load ratings 111 etc- these ride harshly (had 112 Pirellis). Be aware that staggered set ups must be matched and are harder on the Xdrive Transfer case , lots of twisty stuff on the oil pedal will accelerate the demise of the actuator gears and internals. Been running 18's for the last few years simply because every drive starts and ends with 20k of twisties Pricings is about the same / a bit more for decent tyres.
balancerider 253 Report post Posted March 3 The 20’s are a noticeable step up again in cost from 19’s if you want reputable brands. Budget 2.5-3k / set
3pedals 1068 Report post Posted March 3 decent 19's are $2,500 to 3,500 per set - last set of conti's were $2800
E30 325i Rag-Top 2020 Report post Posted March 3 Not even sure if 20" rims were invented when the E53 was developed? They were definately a "thing" when the E70 came out. So the suspension set-up on the E70 would definately have been designed with that size of wheel in mind, so shouldn't be any major issues. Poor ride and handling is usually a by product of incorrectly sized rims and tyres being fitted to the vehicle in my experience. If you have wheels that were a factory option fitted with the correct tyres then that removes that possibility, which is a good start. The E70s do seem to have a liking for going through tyres, especially rears, fairly quickly. I think this is in part down to the rear geometry causing the inner shoulders to wear, and the fact that it is easy to drive them like a sporty car as they go so well - with the result that things do wear out a bit quicker.
BM WORLD 1170 Report post Posted March 4 yup e53 4.6is had 20" factory alloys 315 rear 275 fronts
3pedals 1068 Report post Posted March 4 Style 87's as per brents pic were definitely an E53 wheel; those and style 131 are the two lightest wheels for the 53 - Note the 131 is a non staggered 18 . Style 132 was the very common staggered 19 - but these are a heavy wheel.
E30 325i Rag-Top 2020 Report post Posted March 4 Well there ya go. Good point about the weight of the wheels, chucking massive after market wheels that weigh a ton onto the factory suspension is one common way to get some interesting ride issues! 3pedals 1068 Report post Posted March 4 So is the all too common practice of throwing X5 wheels on a 1 or 3 series. Decently light wheels on an E36 are 8-9 kg - imagine what happens when you fit style 132's on one at 14 or 17kg a wheel !!
