Palazzo 477 Report post Posted July 30, 2023 Thinking of changing a car, maybe to a 1 or 3 series diesel. But, it will only do short trips, like 2km each way. Plan is that it gets a scheduled motorway or longer run every two weeks. Am I asking for trouble?

treone 648 Report post Posted July 30, 2023 (edited) Have thought about doing the same. Out of curiosity, what the general consensus of constitutes a long daily trip for a diesel - eg 10, 20, 30+ kms round trip? Or more ? TonyT 48 Report post Posted July 30, 2023 As a minimum you'll need to give it about half an hour of full operating temperature running every 800-1000km (so about once per tank full) to regenerate the DPF. Obviously the more you can run it at at full temperature the better.

Or more ? mine (full disclosure - it's a 3L so slower warmup) takes ~15mins on the motorway for temp to get to centre of gauge. slightly faster in summer. I would be unhappy doing less than 40k round trip in mine 1

Short trips of only a couple kms is torture for any ICE, condensation never has a chance to evaporate and the oil gets contaminated very quickly with fuel, moisture etc.
