E36 M3 (OEM + project)

Cheers for that. Bit strange as its running really well 95% of the time. Seems most likely for it to be a temperamental sensor.

Remove, clean and test the throttle position sensor (TPS) also. Mine gave me all sorts of crazy engine symptoms until I tracked it down.

Funny you should say that, was flicking through a service manual and this is on one of the inspections saying to be replaced. Should probably do mine too.

Finally got some foglights to complete the front end. Also have another little addition in the pipework courtesy of Jake Simpson.

Had a pretty successful weekend- pulled the motor and gearbox out of my cousins 535i E28 (HEAVY) and pulled the plenum off the M3. I was expecting to find some perished vacuum lines but after have a pretty good look around everything seems ok. The one thing I did spot is that the small diameter line running to the bottom of the plenum was not connected (see picture). I cleaned out the ICV , throttle bodies and oil separator and not much crud came out. After putting it all back together I think that car runs slightly better but still seems rough on idle when cold. Seems to be related to the secondary air pump but not sure how. Its very loud and 'boomy' when first started and once its out of the blue on the water temp it settles down. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I've found that giving it a rev stops the problem too but I'm not keen on doing that on the regular.

The secondary air pump is something that you want to delete anyway.

Definitely. I'll probably go for the VAC delete plate (looks cool). I'm struggling to find information on deleting it on an S50B32. Seems that removing it from an E46 throws a CEL and you need to code it out or it will be in limp mode. Not 100% sure if I need to do the same or not.

No codes or limp mode with the E36.

I sure I read when deleting mine, that to get the plate on you needed to remove the headers.

I see if I can find the link I followed

On the m54's that I've done it on I've never had codes, and never needed to remove the headers.

It was very simple.

Looks like the SAP delete has just moved to the top of my to do list!

IIRC the M3 headers are a hell of a lot more involved than M54 ones.

Fairly convinced my intermittent issue is the TPS. Even though I'm not 100% sure, I've bought one anyway since its a service item.

Good weekend for the M3! Decided on a whim to give the Meremere drags a go and had a blast. Though the car is not competitive by today's standards, I was pretty happy to have gotten a PB of 13.9 at approximately 104mph. (Will find the timeslip) I also replaced the TPS to try solve the slight hesitation issue. The car definitely runs smoother now but still does always have the crisp, sharp rev that it should. I'll have to make the time to get it scanned and diagnosed. Still has all the go that it's supposed to have! Also stoked to have my new plates arrive in the mail today.

Another little update for the M3. Took the car out for a drive the other night and when giving it the jandal the radiator decide to give up. Not surprising considering it's 25 years old. I was looking for an OEM replacement but my options were limited so I went with a Mishimoto. Pretty good quality but my only gripe with it is that the fitment was a let down. Had to fabricate some aluminium brackets for the oil cooler as there were no mounting points and had to trim bits of plastic here and there on the fan shroud to get clearance around the viscous fan. Happy to have the car back up on its feet, just needs a really good wash. Also managed to replace the drivers seat quick-fold cable which had broken. This ended up being a little bit painful but got there in the end. The other thing which I've done is put the car on some style 24s for a more period correct/original look. Not related to this thread but I picked up an E39 M5 the other day too.. what an incredible car! Bunch of photos below.

Update: COVID-19 may have foiled my wife and I's plans to go to Europe but I've been making the most of the lockdown. Decided to take a trip to Repco pre-lockdown to get some 10w-60 Castrol Supercar oil, some Penrite dot 4+ brake fluid and some ATF to replace the transmission and power-steering fluid. After doing the brakes I started to get pull things apart to try track down my idle issue. Before long I had the plenum off but couldn't find any perished vacuum lines. I figured that while its off it would be a good time to rip out the secondary air pump in case it had anything to do with the issue. One thing lead to another and the car is now without AC, an SAP or a viscous fan ? I need to take the viscous coupling off still and replace it with an electric fan (on the to-do list). Also decided to drop all the coolant and replace it all with a proper 50/50 mix with the best coolant I can find. Anyway, back to the SAP. It's pretty simple to remove it all only the AC is very much in the way.. as are the headers. I couldn't commit to taking the headers off so I decided to leave the steel pipe running to the head and blanked it off at the end. I was surprised at how little information was online about doing this on an S50. Not as easy as the M54 and S54 as I found out.. Will fire the car up once I've recharged the battery and see how it runs. Have left the heat shields off the headers as it looks miles better but would be interested to see if anyone thinks this could be detrimental. After putting the intake back together I was pretty stoked to see that the subframe already had the 4 nutserts required to bolt up my x-brace so I ended up doing that too.

On another note, I sold my style 24s to my cousin to put on his 328i coupe and bought some 17x8 and 17x9 BBS LMs. I used to own these 2 years ago and only just managed to convince a mate of mine to sell them back to me. They're not to everyone's taste with the gold centres but I think they're quirky. Took some time to scrub them free of all the layers of brake dust which had accumulated over the years.. not sure it will last long but it seemed like a good way to spend two days at the time. Hope people find the update interesting and not too much of a picture overload.

Any improvement in your idle issue after removing the SAP?

Out of interest is it still running the pre-cat 02 sensors?

GLWS will be interesting to see where the market is at..

Yep it's a bit better. I think its partly just how these cars are when they're cold. Yes to the 02 sensors.

Update: replaced the plastic inner wheel arches and undertray with near new ones, replaced a fuel line which was cracked, replaced the fuel cap and bought the following parts:

-Purple tag steering rack

-Staggered DS2s

-Ruff gearbox mounts

-Powerflex RTABs and LCABs

-OMP WRC sterring wheel and bosskit

Pics below.

Edit: I should really get some decent photos together. They seem to be getting progressively worse..

Whipped the exhaust off over the weekend to repair a crack and cut the cats out for a more exciting exhaust note. Also changed the spark plugs, LCAB, gearbox mounts (rubbish for a street car, taking them back out) and gave the car a wash. Slowly getting there.

Emissions or now having a flat spot at 3k? To be honest it was a waste of time, not much better at all. Hardly cost me anything though so not fussed.
