Hi all.. i thought id start this topic for myself but also those that might be in a similar situation. Ive owned about 10 bmws since i started driving and they range between these models: e30 e34 e36 e39 e46 The latest being a 2002 facelift e46 sedan 330i msport. I now face a dilemma on what i should get next.. the logical step "up" would be a e90/92 of some sort. But all the early model e90s are not to my liking looks wise and ive driven 323i 325i and 330i in e90s and didnt like it. Also drove a 325i vert and didnt like that either. Im kind of tossing between a tidy 330ci or m3. Otherwise going all out on a 335i e92 coupe. Ive been driving around in a 2005 w211 e350 mb (i know right? Kill me) and whilst the performance is good and rides comfortably i cant help but miss the straight 6 of the m54b30.. Not really into e60 5 series so rule that out. Might go for another e36 if a tidy 328i coupe comes up but i do want to try something newer.. maybe a 130i? Keen to hear any opinions. Cheers Kyu

Mmm Z4M coupe indeed, but they are still fairly pricey. Well the whole point of cars for me is to do something different, namely that old trick of putting a bigger engine in with more cylinders. So much fun!

My mum has had a 3.0 for yonks. Don't think anything has ever gone wrong with it ( apart from the time when my nephew locked himself in the car and managed to get his head stuck, which caused my parents to panic and cut the roof open to unlock the doors ). The steering is heavy, it bangs and crashes over bumps ( hers has the 18's and low profile tyres ) and tramlines like a bitch. But I drove it all around the North Island and it was a great roadster.

TBH, most of the people that will be having car issues, probably just had cars that were f**ked in general in the first place.

4-door shells tend to be stiffer than 2-door, although there are two extra bloody great holes in the side, this is more than made up for by the extra bracing that is added around the door frame to hold it all in place. The down side is that this then results in extra weight (especially in an E30), which you can't really get rid of. The other thing I would suggest you consider when looking at which shell to use would be the length of the wheel-base and the ratio to the track width. Can make a difference in terms of turn-in, under/over steer, etc. and give a better 'starting point' to adjust from. If you are really worried about the twisting noises Michael I suggest ripping out all the interior panels and adding a full cage, which runs to the strut towers front and rear !!

Do it. I live central city and have done since the earthquakes, sure, after moving from here to AKL for 2 years and then back again its not much of a comparison but it's getting there. Drive my semi-low E30 around and there's no problems. So much sh*t gets talked about how bad it is but its really not. I work in architecture and there's a heap going on / going to happen regardless of what you read in the press. Its a cool place if you avoid the scum / where to go, like every city. + you can go snowboarding soon! Damn, I should work for the local tourism board or something..
