That's totally logical 🤣...
I stripped down my Touran engine to fit the thermostat, discovered it was the wrong part, so took the engine out and put a VR6 in there instead. Then couldn't drive it for a year while I finished it. 😁
I would actually say you are better off buying one that is aesthetically pleasing to you. Then doing all the basics early even if they may have been done before.
Gaskets
Water Pump + Hoses
Full fluids service
Brakes
Suspension including all bushes
Vanos control
Cam Position sensors
Make that part of your budget.
You might get lucky as on a very rare occasion NZ owners keep receipts of the work done.
Most of that stuff above is actually pretty well priced. Places like spareto.com have many options from BMW genuine to brands you thought made washing machines.
Did some late night Italian tuning - quick run out to Arrowtown and back. Got absolutely DUSTED on the Dalefield back roads by an Alfa GTV. The 1.6 was well above 7K and spitting flames as it rocketed past me 😁 God they're an achingly gorgeous car.

The vert chassis is slightly different to sedans or coupes. It is wider at the front at the front and where the sump guard would normally mount is no existent. There's approximately 7mm of gap betwen the guard and the sump. The picture isn't doing it justice. Fits nice and snug to the engine subframe and to the front chassis rails now.
