Alot of scum bags out there! Take care out there folks, you either fight back or give em your car.

haha amen and with the gearbox i situation i have now...it would be able to dyno me in reverse only. and that would be a waste. love to see what the mazda is on the dyno though
There wouldn't be a dyno available to handle the rotary pwr! Great smooth engines, had a 72 RX2 coupe & a 73 RX3 coupe. They seem to be worth a bit of money now.

I always as a rough guess just convert wheel KW to BHP to get a rough flywheel figure. Different cars loose different amounts though
I mean my car would put out say 65-70kw at the wheels, so 67is 90hp. So 90 odd KW at the fly. No?
Dyno figures for your car here. http://www.alpinaaustralia.com.au/dyno/dyn...0i_Manual_2.htm

Gus/my old - Turbo 318iS
230 rwhp as measured by Gavins dyno - 25% power train loss roughly so call it 258 flywheel hp.
So 143hp/ltr <- god bless turbos
212hp/ton
Edit: it weighed 1220 kg
Forced induction is bloody good when you see those figures.
I still don't get pwr train loss, say you are developing 200hp @ wheels, you then turbo and you get 300hp @ wheels.
200hp + 25% =250 flywheel
300hp + 25% =375 flywheel
375-250=125, yet my increase was only 100hp, the higher the hp the 25% should be scaled?? I don't know, am i missing something in the equation??Thanks. ALSO, some say 15% loss on manual cars?? Don't know.

I have put this link up before but some people may have missed it, very interesting dyno figures for a wide range of BMW engines.
Don't get a fright when you see how LOW some can be on older engines.People say HP is bragging rights, sells cars.
-
idea stolen from somewhere else but it makes more relevance here
my E30 is 340bhp and 1240kg's so that makes mine .Hp is at the flywheel
1. Rileys V8 e30 is 271.1 bhp per Tonne and 85bhp per Litre
2.
3.
4.
50:Completely stock M30 with no AFM tune: 131bhp per tonne/ 61 bhp per ltr. ( i guessed 210 flywheel??? & 1600kg)
-
Boris I've gone with the factory quoted 286 hp for mine - like yours was 210/218 (can't remember which) off the production line - although now that you've had it tweaked it might possibly be a bit more?
Thanks Simon, don't forget those are supposed figures for NEW engines. Some probably +%, some -%.
-
How do you work out flywheel HP? My car had 136.1 kw @ 5400rpm, dynapack hub dyno.
+ 320nm @ 4160rpm.
From memory, i think Gavin said the HUB dyno would read approx 8-10kw higher than ROLLER dyno with tyres.

Nice Alteeza, did it have beams motor?
(If you are passing Bavarian stop in and talk to Rob, most helpful chap.)

Electrics/electronics are going to be the biggest problem to keep older cars on the road. It's a bloody pain, if you look inside alot of the electronics they are standard consumer, not high temp stuff.Pisses me off.(Electronics tech myself)

Looks nice Brad, not stunning like the car. It's all very personal, you go with what YOU like is the best option.
Cheers.

Don`t forget what we discussed Graham. ECU is included in the price. M30 3 litre ECU from an E34 works really well.
Although there are other options we have discovered.
Have a M52 2.8 crank avaliable as an option.
Regards Ray
0212HELLBM
ps I have 6 M20 B25 motors in stock.
2 around the 100k mark
Ray's got the options covered! All you need is the answer!!!! Which option???????

M30 big block 6 in E30, have a look if interested.
Graham, might pay to speak to Rob over at Bavarian. He has done one so can explain pitfalls/cost etc etc.
Just a thought!

Good stuff, the parts would be the cheap part for me, labour being the killer. A M20b-25 could be found for under a grand easy, and it would only take a day to install... considerably cheaper than building, fitting and tuning a 2.7.

Thanks once again guys, I was quoted $1,200 for a piggy back installed with a Dyno sheet to back things up. To remap the factory ECU I was quoted $1,125 so not much in it. Either way im not going to spend near 30% of the cars value on a tune.
I am staring to think that this is a expensive conversion for “only†200 odd BHP, to build the 2.7 I essentially need to buy another two engines + pay for labour and new refresh parts + supplements etc..It’s quickly adding up to nearly $5K. I could have a 2.5Vanos in for not much more than that!
Maybe a M20-25 with a few little mods could be better option. What kind of power would a M20-25 put out with say a set of extractors, polished intake plenum and a cold air box? Say 180bhp
Just drop in a std M20 2.5ltr like you said, pwr output is anyones guess on an older engine. Dyno is only approx at the wheels so only good to compare before/after figures.
The big mistake many people seem to do is massive internal engine work and leave the std intake plenum, if you are going for HP you need individual throttle bodies. Thats what all M engines do.
My 2 cents.

I think the dyno will maybe give that 10hp. Hardly a huge difference.
It will be significantly cheaper to tune motronic than use a piggy back.
I too am not a fan of the 2.7 build - not enough power for all the work (unless you go fairly hardcore on it)
Peak horspower/torque thru the mid range counts for a lot when it costs you nothing (ecu/tune) compared to internal engine mods.
Yes, will be cheaper to tune motronic but you still have barn door flap.
Thats the prob with 2.7 build, you are correct.
Hey, what do i know!! I'm just fiddling around for a hobby.
-
Hi Graham, stating the obvious but the 2.7 build will be expensive (ecu + tuning small part) and only modest increase. The Alpina 2.7ltr was only rated at 210ps @ 5800, 289nm @ 4500.
Have a good read on the overseas sites where they talk about it, maybe pickup a good later 2.8ltr?, unless you want to stick to M20.
I fitted piggyback Map-ecu 2, call me on 5231711 if you need info on piggyback.
Rgds
Boris.
Forgot to tell you the big advantage with piggy back over just chip etc is the removal of the AFM, big difference!
-
All the best Brent!
-
Thanks guys that would end up costing me the same as a piggy back though. I can get a M50 ECU installed for that money.
Does anyone know if there is a chip or a factory BMW ECU that can run the 2.7??

Yeah I know about the Sultan's B12, nice car The tyre size thing I was talking about was actually referring to the 285/35/18's possibly being too wide for 18x9.5" wheels, but obviously they are ok as Alex is running them. There are a few E31's out there with 10.5" or wider rear wheels with 305's or wider on them, it would appear there is a ton of room under the arches.
I like the design of the spokes on the Alpina's, but not the big centre cap. I quite like their design of wheel that has got 5 groups of 4 parallel spokes, those are quite nice.
Ideally it'd be either M-Par's or M6 wheels, just need to find some
Any idea when your 850csi will be ready for shows etc?
Maybe you could buy the ex sultans car as well???

Hi brad, not sure if you checked out Alpina B12 5.7 (416PS / 570nm)but it ran as follows:
FRONT: 18x9 alloys, 245/40/18 tyres
REAR: 18x10.5 alloys, 285/35/18 tyres
Would assume your beast would take the same,(buy some classic Alpina alloys)
Here is the Alpina Registry Link if anyone is interested, check out the Sultans B12!!

Ahh yep, I wasn't sure about running 285's on the back, I was thinking 275's might be the max.
Send me an email so I've got your address so I can send you pics when the bumper has been done

Have told wife/daughter when driving, doors must be locked and if you have to just run them over.
