  1. Today, I managed to get from home in Glendowie into town via Tamaki Drive and achieved 8.1l/100km on the way in and 9.2l/100km over the entire journey, including the return trip (which did include 2 full throttle accelerations to the rev limiter).

And I clocked up 200,000km on Tamaki Drive.

Thats excellent Cain, the M30 engine couldn't achieve those figures unless i put an egg under my shoe!

  2. ahhh dynapack dyno so thats not quite correct either.....the dynapacks calculate a PS horsepower figure I beleive. My 535 measured about 140kw at rear wheel, but apparently this is not correct....i thnk there is a pot about this earlier in this thread around where i published my results.

The only way to compare approx power between cars is the use of the same dyno on the same day with the same operator.

  3. All the comments about the E34 are pretty much spot on. It is the best saloon for the $$$, when released in 1988 Mercedes stated it was "too cheap for a car like that".

The 540i is a massively powerful car, i would go for the manual 6 speed any day.(540is)

The manual boxes will outlive any auto (another expensive rebuild), the only downside with the V8 is high mileage rebuilds will cost a pretty penny.(plenty around so hopefully drop another engine in)

The only other issue now is fuel cost, depends how deep your pockets are.

If anyone has a faulty E34 dash cluster i can replace all the caps etc.(electronic techo)

  4. you have the map 2 version correct???How long does the tuning process take?did you get a MPG improvement.Do you get a decrease in co2?

Yes, Map 2. Tuning can take a few hours but anyone with BMW M30 engine can now download my map from their site so you would only need slight variations to compensate for your engine characteristics etc.(you could drive immediately)

Better economy when cruising at motorway speeds, no diff town driving.Don't know about co2.

The good thing about map-ecu is you can hook it up in learn mode with your old air flow meter and it builds up a base map.

  5. thats some serious fast and furious sh*t

i like the idea of having a laptop in my car for other use than dvds and games

    interesting . . . . .

how much am i looking at spending ?

The tuning via laptop should be initially done by tuner, you can hook up while running and see the full 3-d map.

This is the best you can get without going to FULL REPLACEMENT ECU/LOOM.

Cost?? i would say up to $1000 depends whether you have Map-Ecu 1 or 2,(incl custom tune)

Check out their website, N.Z. made/designed/backup etc.

If you want to look at mine let me know.

  6. When you say real time tuning, do you mean something like superchips? Who change the ecu programming? Or do you mean take the standard chip to a place and get it dyno tuned?

No chip change with Map-Ecu. Via lap top you can alter the fuel & timing while on dyno etc.(proffesional tuner)

The lap top plugs in to the Map-Ecu piggy back computer, also you get rid of the primitive barn door flap AFM.

Best to check out their full website.

  7. so best bet just to get it tuned instead of getting a performance chip?

will that do the same trick?

but will it be back to stock again e.g. the same tuning 20 years ago. or better ?

These are the results i got by fitting Map-Ecu and real time tuning.

Huge gains thru mid-range and modest top end, you have to remember my engine is 100% stock.

Better throttle response and excellent Seat of the Pants FEEL.

  8. Go for the real time tuning. I have done that with Map-Ecu, you keep your stock ecu and remove the barn door air flow meter.

You are literally custom tuning your engine/fuel parameters that YOUR ENGINE likes etc.Any future mods can be real time tuned again to compare what your engine was doing before & after.

If you check overseas you will find rolling road tuning the norm.(Bexeley motorworks in uk etc etc etc)

  9. Thanks for the comments guys.

I was just going off the owners manual.. Would be keen to see that brochure at some stage?? Do BMW keep them in an archive?? I know Toyota keep brochures fore most models dating back to the 70’s.

Im only looking for 150kw, I wonder if that is achievable using the 2.5 or 2.7.

You are welcome to check out promo brochure.(all about E30 Touring only)

Brent has a good E34 M30 engine 3.5ltr, stock @ 155kw approx, strong torque @ 305nm. Drop that in like an Alpina B6s, Rob @ Bavarian put one in his E30.

That would be the cheapest/quickest way, you can't beat cubes.

  10. I do plan on keeping them, I meant Momo wheel as in steering! The only wheels that would replace them would be BBS RS Split Rims, but that would be down the track as would rather spend the money on make here haul first. Im sure there is something wrong with the engine, the owners manual sagest It will hit 100 in 9.8 seconds buy it feels more like 20, I would best describe it as lethargic if that makes sense, I have an old Corolla with a 1.3 2E carburetted motor that would dick her in performance! ! Its leaking oil all over my drive also.. So I will need a 2.5/7 sooner than later.

Fantastic looking E30. Have the original Touring colour brochure/booklet (27 pages) and it states 0-100km in 11.5 sec

same as 318i touring(auto 13.2sec) You have to remember the 2ltr only has 164nm (121ft-lb).

Did you get a pre-purchase done to check compression etc? Maybe engine a bit tired??

  11. Cain is your LE tricked in any way? Performance enhancing drugs? Aftermarket chip?

If you run euro spec cars they are pretty well tuned. To give you some idea on the work needed to give gains without capacity increase look at the M60 4ltr by Alpina.

    Gas flowed heads,compression 10.7:1,lightweight Mahle pistons,remap ecu, peak power 315ps @ 5800 & 410nm @ 4600.

    Not huge gains over stock.

Their next shot gave 340ps but with 4.6ltr.(93mm borex85mm stroke)

Don't expect BIG gains solely with chips on modern BMW engines.(probably some exceptions)

  12. Hey,

I have a B10 chip to put into my 535iS which apparently gives a 15-25hp increase. Anything I need to know before I do this??? I assume its safe and wont blow up the ECU??

Might pay to wear a earthing wriststrap when handling ECU and eprom.(discharges static) Do not touch eprom legs, hold rom on ends and pay attention to notch polarity.

    Hope that is some help.

  13. since i dont have my e30 bible handy hopefully someone can help me.

with the m52 2.8 crank, you dont need to machine much apart from a sleeve onto the nose of the crank? the 325i rods/piston combo sits at the correct height? might be a much better than 2.7 build if i get the crank

also, does anyone know where in NZ you can get an MAF replacement kit that sends afm signals to the ecu? i know gavin bellars could remap the chip now, but would be nice to get improved throttle response too

    thanks guys

Hi Gus, with rgds to MAF replacement you could use Map-Ecu 1 or 2.(replace airflow & can adjust timing on Map2 + can do alot of other stuff)

Check out their website, N.Z. designed etc so back up here.

I finally got the Alpinas on the E34, remember you asked around if the 10" rears would fit.(a while ago)

Anyway thanks for your time back then.

    Mr E34.

  14. Absolutely gorgeous car mate. Great choice of wheels and the engine bay is so tidy! Need to take it on a photoshoot :) Got any interior pictures?

Thanks for the compliments, i have interior shots but i have to reduce their size. Usual M sport black leather interior which is pretty much std for HD12 spec. Engine is Motorsport crackle finish by Rob at Bavarian, completely stock M30 apart from piggy back Map-ECU2 tune.

I am using my Apple laptop & still have problems figuring things out, have to keep pestering the kids to help.

  15. Looks very nice. I too like those wheels.

Photos not taken far from us. Bring it to the BMW Car Club thing on the 18th. We need some E34's there.

Thanks for all the positives, i will bring this car to the Anniversary.
