  1. It is still doable.  But a shed takes a bit more work to get it up to a comfortable room you can use for sleeping.  I see you are in Otago.  Insulate the roof of your shed.  And seal all gaps.  Install a decent sized heat pump.

    Nothing worse than your dream shed that you don't want to be in because it is too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.  I have airgaps where my roller doors meet the roof.  This is normal.  But absolutely useless when it comes to keeping bugs out and heat/cool in.  I am in the process of finding a product to seal this up.

    Have your PA door open outwards.  Mine is inwards and takes up precious space when open.

    When wiring the place up use only 15A plugs.  They are not much more expensive.  And then you can install single phase hoists.

    Good opportunity to install some automation.  E.g. I walk in and the motion sensor that is part of the alarm turns my lights on.  If there is no motion after a few hours it turns everything off.  Grarage doors can be connected to these systems too.  Meaning if you forgot to close it you can just hit a button on your phone.
    The motion sensors also alert me to when I have locked the bloody cat in there too.  I run Home Assist on my server.  But other systems like Smartthings are very easy to setup.

    Smoke and CO alarms should be installed.  You can get smart ones of these too.  That way you can be notified of smoke if you are not on site.

    Edit:  Figure out where your hoists legs will be.  Have them make the concrete thicker in those areas.  Mine was another 75-100mm thicker where the legs of my hoist sits.

  2. This is my one. It is smaller than I wanted. But post covid prices were insane. I actually wanted another bay the same size. The far left bay is my workshop. Center is bike and car parking. Right has a four post hoist so I can park two cars. On the outside to one side will go a large carport. It's lined with 21mm ply and the floor is painted with aircraft hanger paint. 

    Lots of things I would do differently.

    Will probably install a 2 post hoist in the middle at some stage. And maybe a wash bay in front as I hate washing cars on gravel. 

    I thought about a sleepout off the side. But you really need to fit it out really well for them not to be noisy and cold. 

    The fit out is expensive if you are not able to do it yourself. Heating / Cooling, ventilation for the garage side. Sealing the gaps. Electrical, internet (they act like a big Faraday Cage). 

    Oh. And Do Not get skylights that are not UV proof. Mine were meant to be and are not at all. They are terrible in the summer. If you get good lights you don't need stupid skylights. I hate them. 


    Edit:  Play all the companies off against each other.  They are all starting to claw for business after being lazy for the last 4 years.  They all source their kits from the same places.

    I don't understand why you would want to do this auto to auto swap.  The GM box is actually pretty good.  It is common, cheap and changes pretty quickly when in sport.
    My one was even abused by only having 3ltrs of trans oil in it for quite some time.  That was nearly 70,000kms ago.  Still running good.

    All manual conversion parts I have seen are crazy expensive.  You would be best to speak with Brent (BMWorld) or Ray (HellBM).
    It is why I snapped up this pretty average manual the moment I saw it.  I could strip the box and conversion parts out and sell them for more than I paid.
    Turns out I feel sorry for it and am now fixing it up...

    Buy James 130i manual for $7k.  Swap all your good bits into it.  Sell yours.


  4. Forgot to mention.  There are a couple of E87's at Pick a Part in Wellington.
    Pretty stripped.  One of them was a late model motorsport.  Had really nice half leather LCI door cards.  I was going to grab them.  Then found someone had taken just one of them.....
    All the FRM3 modules were gone.  I did pull out a FRMA module that I left inside the car in a dry spot.
    I did grab the LCI's parcel tray.  I didn't realize pre-LCI cars had such a rubbish one.


  5. The dual mass flywheels can't be machine reliably.  And they are expensive to replace.
    But the guys a few pages back said it is the most comfortable.
    The single mass flywheels are much cheaper and have more of a sporty feel to it.  But you can suffer from vibration etc.

    The clutch kits themselves don't matter too much.  All three brands are well known and good.

    You purchased at the peak I'm afraid.
    Sell yours cheaper.  Buy James' manual which is a pretty good price.
    Some of the pricing on Trademe is just wild.

  7. Turns out the clutch is already quite heavy.  I suspect that it may already have a single mass flywheel and heavy clutch plate installed.  Would make sense at 207000kms for a reasonably neglected vehicle to have the cheaper option installed.


  8. I just cleaned the Black manual 130i inside (mostly) and out.
    It is the first time I could go over it..

    Outside

    • Needs Bonnet Painted
    • Needs Roof Painted
    • Looks like a small frontal at some stage (tow bar dent) and popped the bumper off in one corner.
    • Windscreen has been replaced by Smith and Smiths worst installer.
    • Some of the door plastics are sun baked.
    • Dents.  Everywhere.  Like it was parked the closest to the door at the supermarket next to the new mum carparks permanently.
    • One headlight is out.  The other looks like it lived in the Sahara for most of its life.


    Inside

    • The filth.  Oh god the filth.  I honestly don't think the seats have ever been cleaned.  Front seats took me 30mins each just to clean.  Not even condition yet.  They came up nice though.
    • I hate people with long nails that scratch everything they touch.
    • Most of the interior came up nice.
    • There are tacks holding the headliner.
    • The entertainment system doesn't even try to work.
    • Steering wheel is the worst I have seen in a BMW since the clapped E36 days.


    Mechanical

    • Clutch is gone.
    • There are lots of receipts.
    • There are lots of oil leaks.
    • It is pretty unmolested under the bonnet.
    • I am pretty sure the owner never once opened the bonnet.
    • 217,000kms and I am pretty sure it has had 2 oil changes total.
    • Everything else seems okay so far.
    • Battery died totally whilst I was cleaning the car.  I can't open the boot until I charge it a little to see it.

     

    At the moment I am really leaning towards keeping it for Targa or something.  Sharing E90 parts makes it pretty cheap to build something out of.
    I have been advised by Kayne Barry that I should look to find a final drive ratio which would allow me to use 3rd through 6th on the track.  Avoiding 2nd.  2nd to 3rd is a wear point with these boxes.
    There seems to be plenty of parts for sale on fackbook marketplace for all the small stuff I need.

    How hard is it to convert the rear lights to the LCI ones?

    A recent example down here would be the road between Masterton and Carterton.  SH2.  They spent a ton of money buying some ladies horse paddock to add a U-Turn bay.  This is due to the Motorbike rider slicers they installed nearly the entire length.
    However the two corners on this road were not addressed.  They didn't use there land purchase (which was right between the two corners) to straighten out the most deadly piece of road.  They just dropped the speed limit, installed wires and left the crumbling surface.  It actually didn't stop someone dying just after they dropped the speed limit....
    Just a warning to anyone going through there.  Don't trust that the surface won't damage your car.  There has been several huge wheel killing potholes through there each time it rains.
