    diff ratios

M20B20, I completely destroyed my 3.45 diff so am using a 3.25 interim, the 3.45 was a good ratio but the 3.25 is too long for my engine, although it's bloody economical with 100kph being 2200rpm in 5th. E: I should also point out that I was running a 4.45 for a while before dropping a whole ratio because it was way too short with a top end of 205kph redlining in 5th and 1st being completely impractical and 100kph being 3300 rpm in 5th.

    diff ratios

    I have a 3.25 open diff that I would love to swap for your 3.64 kph when running a Getrag 260 with a 3.25 diff on 205/50/15's @ 6500rpm: 1st = 60 2nd = 105 3rd = 165 4th = 230 5th = 285 Hope that's of some use
  3. Haha, one would assume that since it's only happened since changing the diff oil that that'd be your problem. Perhaps you've put too much diff fluid in or the wrong type and that's causing your torque converter in the tranny to go nuts??? I would also check that your ATF colour is red, if it isn't then that's no good either and you should replace it with some nice shiney new red ATF.

I disagree, it's not the people driving too fast for the conditions that kill themselves because then how does that explain the people topping themselves along centennial highway where the conditions are perfect???????I'm sorry if this offends but the people offing themselves are the ones that make stupid mistakes or are the result of someone making a stupid mistake. I would attribute most mistakes to being distracted somehow, be it scenery, stereo, or their g/f giving them head as the case was for a poor couple that drove 30m off the highway into the rocks.
  5. Haha, had the same problem, take a 14mm bolt and stick it in the place where the alan key would go then use some vice grips to clamp onto the bolt to undo the oil cap... The other way is to find a big nut or the bolt thing again and use that in tandem with a socket or spanner.
  6. When did you last get or do a full service?

My two cents has to reiterate what Andrew said, it's not speed that causes accidents but driver error, although I will admit that speed as an influence on the outcome of an accident. Take centennial highway, the so called "killwer highway", it's the nicest stretch of road in the region more than capable of handling speeds well in excess of the open road limit and yet people crash in the most unlikely of places...car stereos, mobile phones, driver fatigue, dogs and/or children; these distractions are what cause accidents, not speed. Such as today, driving along the motorway at 110kph, as we all do, and some guy starts to switches lanes into mine right as I started to pass him...talk about lack of spacial awareness, if I wasn't alert to it he would've hit me I also have never had a speeding ticket, perhaps more through luck than anything else, but I bet that if I got one it wouldn't stop me from driving those few k's more than the limit... I like speed cameras, I think they're a great revenue source for the MOJ, and so long as they're not camoflouged or hidden then it serves a good point that a good and alert driver should never be camera ticketed as they'd be aware that there's a camera ahead and adjust their speed accordingly.

    Auto

As far as i'm aware all bmw autos use the standard ATM fluid and some manuals use it as well. The ATM fluid is less viscous than the MTF and I fact I think it's one of the least most viscous of the fluids so i'd say that'd be the reason...using anything but the right type would be quite detrimental performance-wise... Using ATM fluid in a manual is also not a good thing, it's too slippery and makes the g/box quite noisey
  12. Hmmmm, are you sure, my car has always cold idled at 1000-1200 and when warm it's always idled around 600 - 650 and i've got a 1990 motronic engine....

    fuel light test

yea run that baby dry, common really what nasty ass things could possibly be at the bottom of your settled fuel...thats what fuel filters are for right?....right? :mosh: Good point, prob is I don't have a fuel can...hahaha, twould be the second time in a month i'd be calling roadside rescue Roadside rescue and or AA rescue are the bomb, I mean, for a twenny a year you get the assurance that if your pride and joy fails ya you ain't going to stranded and you don't have to pay a cent to get it taken somewhere... I just saved me $80 towing costs just recently...So if you think about it, if you're a real cheap bastard you'll run yourself dry out in the middle of nowhere (but in cell coverage) and then you'll get these guys to top up your fuel tank so you can make it to a station...and you don't have to pay for the top up :pimp:

    fuel light test

I have the same problem, don't know if the light works or not and i've had the needle down past the red...I just don't want to run it out to check in case the light doesn't work and I mess up the fuel system...

If you don't speed then you've got nothing to worry about, unless your Hartage, or me since I ain't ever been tickted For some reason Hartage can be driving excessively and the cops just wave their fingers at him... Or he can be driving a car in excess of the limit with no rego and no warrant and get pulled over for some idle chit chat before being let go without a ticket...of course he was driving a classic...

    Cracked Dash

Yes, you can get your dash welded back together and it doesn't cost a hell of a lot.I went to a guy in lower hutt that welded 3 cracks back and it cost me $30 and the end results are very satisfactory. Ian and Tim have seen it, should their memories (Ian in particular with his alzheimers) not fail them, and they should be able to testify that my welded dash looks fine. Look for a vinyl repair place, sometimes marine upholsterers do them aswell, and if you find a guy that does it under the table then you'll come off one very happy customer
