I've been told that there are 2 standard sizes. Most trailers you hire from the petrol station etc are the smaller sized ones. But on my parents car has a larger tow ball, heavier duty for their boat and car trailers, which both have larger tow hooks, weird I know! I only found this out when I tried fitting a hired trailer on Smaller size would be the way to go unless your hauling an XL trailer around.
