What sort of voltage should my alternator be producing @ idle with the headlights on? Have been monitoring lately, as my amp switched itself off one day when the heater was on full power, headlights on and idling. have noticed when the car is cold, lights off 13.8v (good) lights on 13.7v as soon as the car is warm/hot.. with the lights on 12.5v.

You can drive a manual if you have a fully licensed driver in the passenger seat to "learn". tbh, if you don't have long to wait before you get your full get the manual and just borrow an automatic to sit the test. or if you have a while, keep what you have..save up and wait until you can get your full.. and buy a better E30.

Switch, relay? tried putting it up from the door itself instead of the center console? try putting another switch in the hole? maybe test the switch for electricity with a meter/lamp.

You mean like, ever other E30 in the world of existence? I would go check it out. Before judging anything. it's 20+ years old. I'd rather one that looks sh*t than one that's going to explode.. M10's in my gracious uninformed opinion would be easier because they don't have a Timing belt.

Do it yourself. replace the cambelt before you install the engine... you'll want to do more than just the cambelt however. but it's all easy when it's out of the car... wish I did. M20 > M20 is pretty easy.
