  1. That's true, my friend's e36 M3 has the engine computer damaged twice in 3 years. Both from auto car wash. When the computer is gone, it kicks into safe mode/limp home mode. It won't rev over 3000.
  2. well, it took them 3 hours to do my carand 6.5 litre if you have 6 cyc. Anyway, they gave it a good overall check. (little more throughout than a WOF) Lube all hinges, catches, etc.... Very clean car wash (if I have known how "clean" they cleaned it, I wouldn't have let them do it. So cleaned, my wax are gone! I have to wax the car again....) Maybe a few little things that I don't realise underneath the car... Reset Service Counter and do DME code-read IMO, worth the money.
  3. By the way, if you decided to take the cluster off, make sure you disconnect the battery and wait at least 10 minutes. This will let the airbag systems discharge. Taking off the dash/cluster could trigger the airbag if not done properly. (and you will NEED to take the steering wheels off before you can do the cluster.)
  4. Although I don't think it will do you any good, but it's your choice.Late model e36 also has an backup LED hard wired and hidden into the instrument cluster, if people trying to remove the bulb or the bulb is blown, the LED takes over. SRS system can only be reset by special computer (be it GT1, Modic 3, etc..) Airbag systems are too dangerous to work on as home DIY anyway. Pyro-technic and compressed gas, etc.. For something that could save your life, IMO, Save up and fix it rather than hide it and live with it.
  5. I had mine done at Jerrys too, they are pretty awesome. The special oil service is $119 for 4 cyc and $139 for 6 cyc The oil special doesn't do same work that they do in a "formal" oil service, they didn't tell me what they don't do though. Having said that, the day they had my car, they are so not busy and ended up giving my car a standard service at the special price.
  6. Or try a reputable Auto-Electrician. Most have computer to read and reset the light, but once you kno what's wrong, you will then need to actually fix it to cure it. My 98 323i e36 had the passenger seat sensor gone and triggered the light. That seems to be a common problem. $tealers wants about $750 to replace the sensor, my auto electrician charged me $250 install a new circuty to fool the computer.

    o2 Sensor?

If you want minimal hassel - dealers I've read that you can use a normal O2 sensor (maybe from Jap brand cars as long as they are OBD I or II whatever you car is currently), chop the connector off, solder the connector from the old sensor and reuse. BMW sensors cost upwards of $150+, standard sensor is probably 1/3 cheaper. All that it is difference is the connector. Hope that helps.

    car keys

Merc, VW and Audi have them, never seem one on BMW though. You insert the whole matchbox "key" into the hole for 7-series I think.
  9. This colour is illegal on NZ road anyway, because any light shine on it will dazzle other road users or affect the vision (not to mention the potential effect on speed radar and laser guns) hence illegal.
  10. For some reason, when I use 98, I actually got WORSE milage compare to 96. I don't know if it's just me or what. This happen to my e36, Civic, Accord and CRV. (yes, I am an ex-Honda freak)

    Strut Braces

That means any more the others are charging is the extra profit.

    Strut Braces

Wouldn't be better to get X-brace for under-body? It doesn't look as cool, but they are realy good for improving stiffness of the chassic. Pic is the Genuine BMW ones for e36. (standard on convertible and M3)
  13. Just play dumb when you got questioned by the insurance company. "What K&N?? I got them from Repco and they say they are the ones for my car...."

    Boot draining?

do a combination of drift, burnout and drags after the car wash, that will make sure no water stays anywhere on your car..~~ :pimp:
  16. I always how they "break in" to our BMWs... especially e36, e39, etc... they all have deadlock system in the door. Once the door is lock, you can't even open from inside.
  17. whats your excess like? Me and my GF excess is around 5K and my parents is well under 1K if i remember right ... Excess of 5k is pretty much equal to no insurance except you totalled your car, rear-ended a Porsche or got sued big time.I got a policy from National Auto Club on my Honda Accord, VTec 2.2 litre 1996. $1350 premium, $1400 excess on at-fault accident, $1400 on top for stolen car. Insured for $8000. Hope that helps.
  18. There's 2 version of this light, I think it's called or made by "Eurostar". 1 version is like this in the photo the other version is a red lens version much like a standard ones on late model e46s Personally, I like the red lens one better Of course, both version have Coupe & Sedan varient.

  20. Hi everyone. Just thinking of getting a break upgrade but want to save money (like most of us here do). I am wondering, whether it make sense to buy a new, uprated front rotor, then shift the old front rotor to the rear. Since most fronts are bigger and more powerful than rear anyway. Also would like to know is it true that a LVV cert is needed for any break upgrade?
  21. yeh.... if you happen to have a post-94 BMW (in fact, any BMW with factory immobiliser), it would cost at least $160 to get a spare key to be cut at a dealer (read... $tealers)
  22. Where did you have yours done? How much? How long does it take to finish?
  23. Pushed out? how can a wheel be pushed out? It they are pushed out, they are bent and can't be used again isn't it?Anyway, my rims are pretty straight when the tyre guys doing wheel balance on it. Hopefully it won't be that for me....
  24. That's what I thought when I bought the car. I change the tyres and the noise quiet down a little bit. The rest of the noise must be the bearing then.....those steam train noise is driving me nuts I started to dislike my car... I thought those bearing are quite sturdy ain't they? How can we tell if it's the front one or the back one? I saw the WOF guys shack the wheels when they check my car, is that what they are trying to find out?
