  1. Was just checking on trademe for the latest M3 listings (as you do) and found this one?http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Cars/BMW/photos/a-130104429/p-55644360/k-319617.htm

    Wheres the M3 seats????

As far as I know SA built/specd E36 M3s dont have the "real" M3 seats. Im guessing this car came from SA?

  2. My lucky little brother and 3 work mate for the second year running went to the Ring.

This time they hired a E36 M3 3.0 as well as a Golf Mk5 GTI:

Red M3 with Black GTI behind it in this pic:

He also came across this E92 M3. Seems like it was some kind of test car, it didnt feature and badges anywhere (not even the steering wheel) and also had crosses marked on each wheel arch. Any idea what you guys think it is? Some kind of CSL mule? Maybe a tuners test car?

  3. Hi Golfboy666GTI,

Are you just refering to e30 m3's that have been imported from Japan?. As far as im aware there was only ever the Euro spec e30 M3 and the US spec M3. There was never a 'Japan spec' version made.\

I have a US Spec M3 which was imported to NZ from Japan. It's fitted with the US spec gearbox if that helps.

    Laurence.

Does your car have the US side lights or have they been removed?

  4. Hi Golfboy..

If you're after a Euro spec e30 M3 which i think you are then the best place to find one will be in the UK..

Most, if not all Jap imported e30 M3's come from USA.

There is no Japan version e30 M3, only cars imported into Japan with either Eurp dog-leg or USA spec 'H' pattern m3's.

Is there any particular reason you are after a dog-leg e30 M3?

I've got the US 'h' and will probably change to dog-leg only because i'll be changing out the diff and gearbox for some track/street ratio's. You could always do the same if you find a US spec cars are easier to find on EBay etc.

Cheepest that you're going to get a semi-decent e30 M3 into NZ is going to be around $16,000-$18,000. A good condition one i'd expect to go for anywhere from $25,000 upwards depending on engine spec + any special extra's . Then you'll need to put aside around $10,000 - $15,000 to account for re-build engine, any mics parts etc.

What are your plans once you get yourself one?

    Laurenc.e

Just after a car thats original, thats why Im after the dogbox. The downside to a UK car is that they are now 20 years old so Im not happy with all the salty roads these cars have been though. I might look for one somewhere else in Europe?

The plan is once Ive got one is just to enjoy it as a weekend car.

  5. WBSAK050701893987 = 195hp and later 215hp models with a catalyst. 9/87 to 01/89 model year.

Easiest way to tell a US car is that the VIN will read WBSAK03....

All M3's have a special 70 litre tank rather than the standard 55L tank.

US models have the standard 55L tank.

Sport Evolutions have a 62L tank from the 325i cabriolet.

US and canadian spec have a conventional gear box with a 4.1:1 diff ratio, they also have a high mounted stop light, as well as the sidemarkers moulded into the GRP bumpers. On US cars, the speedo reads in MPH, but on canadian cars, it reads in KMH.

The likeliest reason for conventional gearbox on a Euro spec M3 is that the dogleg broke at some point.

The dogleg is a getrag 265.

Yes, thats excactly what I have read but of it seems strange that the 2 M3s Ive come across both have the standard H pattern gearbox and the gear lever pattern logo to the top left of the centre consol?

  6. There were European and USA models, what about a Japanese spec?

    Can some please help me.

A friend is looking to purchase an 86/87 E30 M3.

There seems to be a few different spec cars from the same year from reading a number of books etc.

My problem is finding the right spec car, Im not being to fussy, what I am after is a car with the large fuel tank and the dogleg gearbox as well as being a tidy example so basically Im after a European model.

Ive seen some E30 M3s from Japan, do they have there own spec cars or are they meant to be the same as either European or USA models?

The reason why I ask is because the last 2 Japanese M3s Ive come across dont have dogleg gearboxes. For example:

    http://www5a.biglobe.ne.jp/~korotan/m3v5.html#

If you look at the second picture in you can see that the "H" pattern is standard, also there is a badge of the standard layout "H" pattern in front of the gear knob on the left. I think this might be standard on a Japanese model if there is such a thing?

    Here is another example:

be honest, Im a bit lost, is there is a Jap spec E30 M3, here are some points I have spotted in M3s from Japan:

    -European bumpers (no side lights)

    -Speedo in Km/hs

-Standard 5 speed "H pattern box" (No dogleg)

So what are they? A mix of European and USA models? Maybe a Canadian model? What size fuel tanks do they have?

Here is a VIN from another Jap E30 M3 that had a standard H pattern box: WBSAK050701893987

    Advice would be greatly appreciated.

  7. Is that from rangiora? id say it will be a dogbox

Sorry, it must have read wrong, yes the car has a dogbox, all european spec cars did. I was refering to the little metal box attached to the outside of the trans tunnel in the pic.

  8. Post up pics or ban

Im just waiting for some good weather then Ill post to get some good pics.

Here is our old M3 (one in the garage), the other car is P1 M3s car 3 owners before he owned it.

  9. my mate just bought this car. mint as. no doubt we both drive two of the best example e36 m3 in the country. shot butch! mint score!!

    Thats a very big call.

Mikes old car is a nice example of a daily driver but I wouldnt say it was one of the best examples on the country. I bet there are some examples that very rarely see the light of day.

We have just sold one and purchased another that are very nice examples.

The purchaser of the car just sold had done at least 4 BMW dealer inspections on 3.0 M3s, two of which were Bimmersport members cars over the last year and he picked our example.

Our new M3 that was purchased on the weekend is this car:

Its NZ new, one owner done 82,000 kms, leather trim and its never been into a painters in its life.

  10. Ahh,

The old rhd myth rears its head once more, no rhd m3 in e30 eva, not from the factory, thats for sure.

I rang about this one when it was in JC's, then new, used car yard, be about two years ago, I was quoted $60 k then, so hey try an offer, or just go find a mint one in uk or germany for half the price and have a european trip into the bargain also...

    Does look bl**dy nice though...

Ive heard they have turned down $77K, just shows that there are idots out there.

  11. When was it registered? Maybe get it and spend a bit of time turning it into a minter before its registerable?

It was 1st registered in October 87 (built Jan 87)

To register a 20 year old car its done by the date it is 1st registered (in this case Oct 87 in Japan) and it has to be landed in NZ after it is 20 years old, therefore I couldnt register it without exporting it and then reimporting it after Oct 07.

  12. Well Im a little pissed.

I found an 1987 M3 and thought "bugger its to new" I looked into it further and it turned out that it was built into a winner because it was built in 01/87, I thought great by the time its landed here it will be 20 years old, looking further into it turns out that the 20 years isnt from the date it was built but the time it was first registered overseas. :(

    Here is a pic:

  13. lol .. another m3 rumor kicking around ... im gonna stay outta this one .. ;)

but conrads and oldskools posts are on the money from guys that know what they are talking about.

I know quite a bit about them, just not how about how well they have aged etc.

What are the rarest colours? Most of the ex Jap E30 M3s seem to be grey?

  14. i have done it.

It has to be brought in on a private name! It must be twenty years old then you can keep it left hook. But i think u will find it hard to find any more in Japan. We had a lot come in last year and a lot went to the UK, USA and Europe. But in saying that i am sure there are a couple left here an there.

I thought the same as you in regards to all E30 M3s being LHD, I was told by Jerry Hodges that he had owned the only factory built RHD M3 in the world and that it was here in NZ.
