Couldn't believe it. On the weekend i dodged a bullet big time. i recently put a new engine to overflow tank hose on my E46 330i. The missus has been driving it around town and i took it away to Hanmer at the weekend - 270km round trip. got back to town, pulled in to a gas station and started to fill the car. The missus then noticed steam coming from the front - the hose had blown off! i mustn't have clicked it in properly - AMATEUR!! Had roadside assist so got it towed as was in my nice clothes and was with missus and wasn't certain that was all that was wrong. Rant time ---- The tow truck guy turned up, knowing my car had no coolant, and tried to convince me that he should drive it on the truck and that "she'll be right", then he said he didn't want to use the tow hook because he didn't trust them and that he would use some other part of my car. I screwed it in and told him that's what he is using. Muppet

Aha! Understood. Much appreciated! I'll get looking for a manual 320 one!
-
Hi........jacking thread! I'm doing similar set up but with m52. Is the 320 drive shaft out of a manual or auto or doesn't it matter?
-
looking forward to getting everything together and cracking on! Family and work will slow things down but hey.
-
Have you decided to leave the M52 manifold on? I have been umming and aaahhing about that too as I am putting M52 in my car. So would this computer run the M52 with M52 manifold OR WOULD I HAVE TO GET IT REMAPPED ANYWAY SO MIGHT AS WELL JUST GET MY COMPUTER DONE
-
That would be appreciated. You aren't cam146 on trade me are you? Your name and listings look suspiciously like someone doing an m52 swap!! I saw the dme pop up. If it's yours, what needs to be done to it to run car... Maybe with an upgraded cop for some more horses!! Who did you get to program yours? Cost?

Hi All I have a bit of a shopping list for my swap but would like the following for a start E34 (or E38?) M50 sump and pick up E36 engine arms 320 drive shaft Currently have 4.1 small case but will have to swap this out - any suggestions? Some of this gear may be better for me to source locally in Christchurch for freight reasons but it seems that more bits may be available in the North.

Thank you Cam Do you mean the E36 M42 one like this?: https://www.rexbo.eu/hella/radiator-engine-cooling-8mk376713124?c=100103&at=48 I appreciate the offer of a look at your set up but i am in CHCH - I'm a wee way off exhausts at the moment too :-D i will likely scrap the e36 one and install something custom but will cross that bridge when i come to it
-
Thank you. Yes i am using 5 speed (getrag 220) from M40. i will PM you regarding some bits and pieces i require soon too

Hi there I have started the project thread on the projects page but have a short but sweet list of questions (I have browsed the forums but to no avail) will e36 medium case diff fit in e30 which currently has small case? What is the prefered ratio for medium case in E30 with M52 (it will see some track time among its duties) What is the best radiator for E30 which will soon be getting an M52b28? - I currently have tiny and rooted E30 M40 radiator I have a full E36 328 exhaust system - Is this adaptable to the E30 or is it best to get an exhaust from an M20 powered e30 (my M40 one definitely will not work!!). I've bought a welder so may need to test my skills!!

My car is on ramps in the previous post because I have replaced the water pump on the M40b18 and also replaced the overflow tank and flushed out the radiator. My issue now is that the bloody rad is now leaking from the join between aluminium and plastic so i took the rad out again and....... the plastic broke in the top hose clamping flange. Because i am going to put the M52b28 in soon and now i need a new rad , I wonder what the best rad to put in which will handle the new engine would be. Any ideas? I will trawl the forum but if someone could point me in the right direction it would be appreciated. I will adapt new rad to the M40 till i get the M52 crankin

Hi All I got my E46 330i going and it gave me a taste of a) the 6 cylinder sound b.) the 6 cylinder grunt. I was seriously considering an M42 sap in to my 318 manual (which all 114hp is still going really well) but then a deal came up on trademe and i got myself an M52b28. auto gearbox, exhaust, loom, computer, all the intake gear. I've taken the plugs out and they look okay (not that that necessarily tells much) - although one has some brown on the external ceramic cap - not sure what that is. the cams etc look like the classic "not enough oil changes" but my M54B30 looked like that too and it's a weapon. the exhaust doesn't look of one that has been burning oil and the intake looks good. I know there's been a lot done with these so i will be searching the forums before asking dumb questions - and there will be dumb questions!! This will be a slow burn project as i have a Series 1 XJ6 with a 350chev i need to get going and the M40 is still a goer but i will be getting the parts and knowledge together from now

Much appreciated. It worked! It wasn't so hard actually but doing it in the dark whilst getting hailed on probably wasn't helping my motivation

This is what i refer to as "c*nt of a time number 2 (see E46 reservior post)" . The bloody water pump will not come out and the removal tabs are now broken. This puppy is corroded in. I've got some internet tips and will try these later but any further tips will be gratefully welcomed. I have crc'd it for an overnight soaking

I've just replaced my coolant reservoir on my E46 330i and i have been having what i like to refer to as "a c*nt of a time". I feel like it's mostly my fault. I thought it was going to be a couple of satisfying hours improving my cooling system more as I've just done pump and tstat. I bought a whole bunch of Febi stuff for my e30 and E46 but for some reason bought a Metzeler coolant tank. It looked good but will not click properly in to the base connection. I tried force and vaseline under perfectly legal circumstances but has only clicked in on one side. I decided I would fill and bleed it for now anyway but with the original coolant cap with flat o-rings in a different tank it it now pissing out of there to below the standard level. I haven't overheated the car or anything but have decided that it may be time to revisit my approach. I will assume for now that Metzeler is sh*t but what do people think of Febi? Am I right in thinking that the new tank with different tolerances and old lid could cause said pissing of coolant? It was perfect with old set up and i am confident with my bleeding Do people normally replace the mounting bracket for the tank at the same time as I am now going to purchase new matching FEBI tank, lid, top hose and coolant level probe (the old one gave up the ghost during the change.... faaaaaaaarrrrk!) I deserve a telling off if it's coming.

Ah yes, I'm sorry. Wikipedia shows a picture of a m43 in the m44 page for some ridiculous reason. I'm easily confused!
-
I'm sorry, just to clarify, the picture looks like m42. Is it m42 or 44 you are selling? If m42 Does it have non ews computer?

Some good info. My wheels are 17 x 8 but are not what the car came from factory with by the look of VIN decode. My sway is 23mm front and 18mm rear with a quick measure.
-
You may like to exercise both of these traits when i tell you that I've taken my E30 to 4 track days on 16" x 7.5" rims with undersized 195 50 16 Archilles ATR sport tyres (seriously, Archillies (heal)? not a great name for a tyre). I should mainly be mocked for the stretched tyres but they came with the wheels and I'm a gorse pockets. they were actually quite good, certainly better than the new 195 65 14 Falken ZE912s I have on some basket weaves. Getting some Potenza RE003 shortly for that

Thank you for the brilliant replies. I found the square vs staggered discussion and have read with interest. i will be heading to a track day in a month in the 330 and will still have the non staggered 8" style 47 wheels (vin says it should have 7" style 79 but they're deff not) with half worn 225/45 17 Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tyres. At least i'll have a frame of reference for when I put some staggered wheels and new tyres on.
-
Thanks for the reply. I've never heard of a search bicycle.. Is that what the forum search function is called? I feel a bit daft but i can't find 3pedals post. What is the title of the topic? A bit of searching makes me think that if you have a car that came without staggered from factory (mine didn't) then sway bars and setup of car will be different.
-
Thank you for the great replies. Much appreciated. I will read that article. Im guessing to neutralise oversteer? There's a guy selling 2 sets here in chch $100 a wheel which seemed reasonable but one set turned out to be all 7.5" and the others were staggered but a little too ropey. I do like those 194s too! I think freight may kill it from Auckland but how much for ones with new tyres bm world?
-
I have a couple of sets I'm looking at and one has a small m badge set in to them near the centre. I can't see a stagger on either set. How common is this stagger? Is it fairly easy to see without measuring?
-
I would like to get some style 68 wheels for my E46 . I think they're a good looking wheel. I was just wondering what the whole big deal is with stagger. What are the benefits. Do cars come with this as standard? Do the m sport ones not have stagger? Confused of Christchurch

You are right, no TCU!
