I reckon its pretty cool. He hasnt done anything new, people have been chopping roofs and rat rodding since forever. Hes just copied old ideas and applied them to an e28.

Depends what one your talking about, there is one for the alternator there aswell. What you describe sounds like the air intake for the alternator to me. Its used for cooling the alternator, however it should be fine without it.

I think it was because of the use of lead free solder, it cracks easily from all the heat cycles. The new ones have been changed and are fine.

Replace x-clamps with bolts, replace thermal paste, and rewire the fans to run on 12v permanently.
