  1. The (E30) 325 has developed a fairly substantial oil leak, which I think is the sump gasket. The bottom of the engine is covered in 20+ years of dirt and oil, so hard to pinpoint, but it's also dripping on the exhaust. From the limited description, does it sound like I'm on the right track?

  2. I think the S Type is an awful looking car, as is the X Type. The XK is interesting and nice to drive, but I wouldn't touch it for repair costs. A friend had one, a piece of plastic fell off something and lodged itself in the engine, $5,200, two months later the gear box went (common apparently), $7,000, then new brakes, $3,000. That was in the first 5 months. Add $900 for a rear tyre and expensive general servicing and it's no wonder the V8 powered cars are cheap second hand. Pity, because I would love an XJR saloon.

  3. True that, after three state road side rescues in three months I still like mine and would rather it than a Camry that never goes wrong… my missus on the other hand thinks its a piece of sh*t and I should sell it!

I got OEM some trim clips for $2.30.. Must be something cheaper ^_^

Cork washer off the throttle body, well under a dollar, can't remember the exact price.

  4. It's not clearly written when they give two power figures for a car with one name, they should have defined it better.

I would love to drive either, had an S55AMG with 368kw for the weekend and it was magic.

On topic, of course the Herald is sh*t, what other paper has to print a list of retractions for the previous days mistakes?

  5. Really? I'm not a Mitsi boy, but I was under the impression 4G63's were thrashable. Have a few friends running 1 bar boost on standard block Evos 4-7 Most of them for more than a year now with the odd track day. Tuned by ST-Hitec. 300hp at all four wheels.

Guys in US have 350+ unopened motors and 500+ with stock bottom end.

I had a friend who used to sell them, he used to get Evo 1-4 back quite regularly from the boy racer set with a rod through the block. He thought they might be better from 5 on. I have no idea, just repeating what he said and he sold plenty of them.

  6. I'm surprised CamB hasn't mentioned FJ20ET, indestructable motor similar to 4G63's. Designed to take massive boost with little work. Better flowing DOHC head than SR's, Solid head design, basically a detuned race motor. And you get the benefit of elegance and weight distribution of a 4cyl in an E30.

The 4G63 had/has a reputation for putting a rod through the block when thrashed, not my definition of indestructible. The Lexus V8 in 4.3 litre form is a very strong engine and I would bet it produces well above the Jap industry standard of 209kw.

  7. You can get an Altezza for sub $10k at Turners and I know someone who just bought one from a dealer for about $10.5k. The dual mass flywheel is expensive to replace which is why you see so many available 2nd hand with TRD light weight ones. They drive nicely, but I found it not overly exciting until you revved it hard, maybe that is the description of a daily?? What about a Torneo SIRt or Euro R?

  8. About 6 months ago, I parked up the convertible (E30) in a garage and took the battery out. Put the battery in today and it fired up first time, but I assume there was a bar that secures the battery to the tray? There is a bracket thing that clips over the battery, but no long bar to secure it to. I assume there was one? It's been so long I can't remember. Anyone have one handy or know where to find one? Cheers.

  9. It doesnt take much for any euro to clock up that kind of money. Tyres, brakes e.t.c is part of maintaining any car. For the year, the X5 has held it's value better than any other german SUV.

I've driven the 3.0 and they go ok, but they've got nothing on the V8!

That was sort of my point, it may be loads cheaper then new, but people who buy one thinking they will properly maintain it on a shoe string are in lala land. Any car that was expensive new will still be pricey to maintain, even after the price has dropped to an affordable level.

When you can buy an entire E30/32/34/36/39 for $6k, those servicing costs are put into perspective.
