Just dont drop it into gear with any revs on and make sure you come to a stop when changing from forward gears to reverse and back again. Standard stuff really. I dont believe model year makes a difference to trans.

I'm pretty sure all E46s' are fitted with ZF transmissions. So at least you don't have to worry about the Jatco problem.

37 HQs is about 36 too many ha. In saying that I had a mint 308 HZ ute about 10 year ago. Replete with rubber floor mats and brown bench seat. Should never have sold it but the gas mileage was horrendous. That engine certainly looks a little odd in that bay HA.

Should be easy to see if theres no heat shield in the way. Unfortunately not allways easy to tell if its stuffed without removing it. The one I did on mine was cracking but wasn't obvious untill I took it out. Its reasonably easy if you've done that sort of thing before. Plenty of info out there in interweb land on how to go about it. See HERE
