f/l vs pf/l myths or facts?

Recommended Posts

There are 2 things I want to clear up re the difference between pfl and fl E30s.

1. Someone once told me fl e30s are about 100kgs heavier that pfls due to revised door construction or something along those lines. I had never been told that before and haven't heard it since. Is that bullsh!t?

2. Is it true that fls had better rust proofing?

Please don't give me hearsay. Post evidence

Cheers

Re: Weight

My owner's manual that came with my car new lists a FL 318i 4 door with manual transmission, as having an unladen weight (that is, ready to drive, with a full tank, but no passengers or special equipment (eg factory options like electric windows and (probably?) power steering)) at 1110kg.

If you still have your owner's manual from your pre FL car, check the back, there should be a list of weights and dimensions. Autocar UK contemporary road tests list a 1986 BMW 318i four door manual saloon as weighing 1070kg, which is 'as tested', with a full tank of fuel.

Apparently an M10 weighs 83kg, and an M40 weighs 81kg.

Of course, we could always take your car and my car to a weighbridge!

Id be keen for a weigh-off sometime. Yes I have all my orig documentation I'l check that. I remember reading it and seeing a manual 318i is only like a sec slower to 100 than a 325 auto lulz.

The only thing i can tell you for sure is the facelift E30 shell had many improvements in crash testing, the offset 56km per hr frontal was designed into the new shell. This would presumably add more weight.

....And chassis stiffness. Rust? Are the facelifts galvanised.

My fact is the FL also has lower rear arches and aprons.

My E30 marketing booklet of the time states, ' the body is zinc plated WHERE appropriate, then it is dipped into a phosphate bath, primed in a cathodic dip bath, all cavities waxed etc'

the weights in the books are not really accurate I find...happy to stand corrected!

i weighed my facelift M325i, with 1 front seat, no rear seats and no boot lining - 1/2 tank of gas and it was 1180kg

fully loaded would be around 1250 i guess?

and they are not galvanised, the facelifts did have slightly better rust proofing however

I stand corrected - I just took figures from my prefl handbook, which has no conv or touring info....

From reading the numbers the fastest way to lighten any model is to swap for a manual box, you save 20kg.

Strange. Mine does. Would be curious to check Gus's theory and weigh one.

And before that we weighed my PreFL 325 and it was 1080 with only front seats and no bootlining.
