Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 1, 2010 Got the front and rear windows in tonight. After alot of swearing because I couldn't get the rubber insert in the window seal. I made a tool out of a 9mm spanner. Then it only took seconds to install the insert. The insert that caused me all the trouble converted spanner insert tool Still got some wof left front window in

Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 4, 2010 (edited) Good news and bad news Good- The car has had all the moldings put on. The chrome one around the whole car and the black ones do the sides- like this The bad- the car went on the dyno today. This is the same dyno that give the m10 (with the side drafts) 78kw atw. We got to just short of 100kw atw @5500-5600 before the power dropped off due to a bad miss fire. The miss fire was traced back to the wasted unit. about 4000 rpm the timing starts to jump and by the 5500 mark its a miss fire. It had shown up earlier in the build but I thought I had fixed it-wrong!! Edited June 20, 2010 by rot62

Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 7, 2010 (edited) I have just about pulled all my hair out over this ignition system. After mucking around with it all afternoon I worked out the fault is with the igniter I got from NZ EFI. I have had a scope on the output of the Jaycar kit and it is very stable. The output of the hall effect cam sensor is also stable but still the timing is all over the show for cylinders 2 and 3. I will ring NZEFI tomorrow and if still no joy I will change to a Megasquirt. Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 8, 2010 (edited) Mega squirt goes in on Sunday NZEFI can stick their wasted spark unit where the sun don't shine. I makes me mad when the only part you didn't make yourself is the undoing of the project. Look don't get me wrong, at the start NZEFI did say that this would not be the most ideal way to manage the ignition and a LINK would be better. $180 or $1500 which would you choose? But now after many hours of pissing around they now tell me that its not as simple to set up as they first told me. MYSELF-"I'm having a problem with the wasted spark unit on cylinders 2 & 3" NZEFI-" the position of the trigger toggle has to be very accurate" MYSELF- "How many degrees before TDC?" NZEFI- "I'm not sure, it may be need to be retarded" MYSELF-" You're not sure?" NZEFI-"I can't remember" MYSELF-" You do have it written down?" NZEFI-"Not sure, I can't find anything" NZEFI-" You will have to keep adjusting your trigger it until you get it right" To adjust the trigger plate I have to keep taking off the rocker cover, move the trigger plate on the front cam shaft, tighten it up again, put the rocker cover back on, start the car to find out that didn't work. Start the process again. Out come- Keen as to sell me something, supplies insufficient information, unable to support a product they sold. Gripe over- time to move on. pureboiracer 0 Report post Posted June 8, 2010 ^wow that sux... ohwell i am asuming the megasquirt system will be worth the extra money once installed??? i am guessing more accurate and intricate tuning?
e30guydownunder 2 Report post Posted June 8, 2010 Bummer, good luck with the MS endeavor. Are you going with MS II v3 and hence going to try for sequential ignition? Especially after having gone to all the trouble getting a CAM sensor working seems appropriate?
Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 10, 2010 sequential ignition? sorry I don't know what you mean. I made some new covers for in the boot

Eddie 66 Report post Posted June 11, 2010 (edited) Any videos? Or more pics of the car like an overview so far.... As in pictures of the interior and all? Once I get it back out side I will take some more photo's, The interior is not finished the door cards are a bit manky and I have spent the money for the carpet on getting the Mega Squirt. Update- I got given a speedo out of a E30 today, so I have modified it to go in place of the 2002 mech one. I very much doubt the car will ever get to 240km Edited June 11, 2010 by rot62
CamB 48 Report post Posted June 11, 2010 Oh. That's clever - I wish I'd done it that way (I bought a VDO one and matching rev counter, which I am integrating like you have - much more expensive).
