M3_Power 636 Report post Posted April 27, 2010 (edited) A famous 1.5 litre 4 cylinder BMW engine .... that only made 1300hp Edited April 27, 2010 by M3_Power
E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted April 27, 2010 ^^ Not bad for a used M10 block! Apparently they liked to use blocks which had been "run-in"" over 100,000kms in a road car to build up the race engines. The 1300hp qualifying engines were affectionately known as "grenades", I'm sure you can work out why!!
Silver Fox 43 Report post Posted April 27, 2010 I heard they used to leave them outside under a hedge to harden up for 2 or 3 years before they used them.
c.robertson00 11 Report post Posted April 28, 2010 ^^^ I heard the same thing. And the gearboxes used to be thrown away after qualifiying because the torque twisted them so badly

Greg111 13 Report post Posted April 28, 2010 Surely you wouldn't be able to stretch any more power out of that motor without forced induction. Huge amount for a four cylinder.

conrod 1 Report post Posted April 28, 2010 (edited) Surely you wouldn't be able to stretch any more power out of that motor without forced induction. Huge amount for a four cylinder. some of the engine bulders in Europe have squeezed around 420hp out of these, 2.7L and 11000 rpm hillclimb engines, frequent rebuilds though! A friend of mine in the Sth Island has a 390hp 2.7L, and it makes mine look very "ordinary!" haha .. very nice conrad. If you dont mind, im quite keen to photo it for the calendar next year? No problem, it is on an engine stand at the moment, but still assembled. Give me a couple of months and I will have two of them here! E30 325i Rag-Top 2956 Report post Posted April 28, 2010 350hp, 9200rpm, four cylinders, no turbo, and its mine! Wow, and indeed - WOW Very impressed, and very jealous. I hope this means that the new car is getting close to being ready Conrad - looking forward to seeing it back on the track, there has been a lack of E30 M3 goodness in the Open class this year. And as for having two of them - well that's just being plain ol' greedy
