Wow well done guys! I quit smoking in 2008 - but I ended up smoking shisha every now and then to help cut down on it. It's been a while now and I don't feel the urge or anything to smoke ciggies. I go out for the occasional shisha with friends sometime, but don't feel addicted to anything and have definitely saved money since my smoking years. Bravo to you all.

Congrats everyone. I'm coming up 1-yr smoke free on 07 November, not that I'm counting. Thought I'd be right back at it when I picked up a drink, so I gave that up too.

Good on ya Glenn. Although I found it odd being able to smoke my cigarette in Glenn's office just a few months back!

I gave up last Sunday morning at 2am. Day 5 and just the rest of my life to go!

I really take my hat off to you guys ae. Seriously!! I've given up twice now, first time cold turkey, last time using 'pills', & my partner gave up at same time last time. The original post of Glenn's is so so so very true, its a ba$tard of a thing really, as somewhere deep inside you avertedly 'know' that you're slowly sorta 'killing yourself' with every smoke you have, yet that knowledge on its own isn't enough.
I was 'gonna' give up, with first new ute I brought in 2004. Did'nt, but kept the inside of it smoke-free for a long time, until I said "Bugger it" one day on a trip back from Auckland. Various vehicles, & motorbikes have come & gone since. My BMW, I was a non-smoker when I brought it, & it still remains smoke-free, & will always, I just need to suck it up & grit my teeth & quit again, properly. My partner, she has done really well, & I'm so proud of her!! Me, hmm - I was doing fine, till the night my dog died - I brought a pack of smokes at that, which is 'weakness' really. Got a good mate of mine on the forum here, down south that quit 3 yrs ago, & he's rocked at it too, & if he can quit, so can I.......

Theres my wee story so far anyway team......you guys that have stuck at it, well done!! ;):) Great thread Glenn.............

I don't feel I have, or others have the right to force people not to smoke. Maybe that's the answer though, or shut down the manufacturers. I feel sorry for the people who would rather not or can't afford to smoke and have trouble kicking the habit / addiction. Kicking it is very hard and also has consequences. Especially for people who have smoked a long time. Getting people not to start is better achieved by education, not laws, and perhaps leading by example. In my younger days, smoking was fashionable and manfacturers were the supporters of all sport. The movies & TV were full of smoking legends. Both my parents smoked and as a youngster I couldn,t wait to grow up and be able to smoke like them and all my hero's. I started when I was about 13/14. In the end smoking could still effect what happens health wise in the future. You just don't know. What I do know is smoking increases the likely hood of an earlier death than being a non smoker all your life. For those reading this thread... please try to give it up. It get's much harder to do as time goes by.

If you dont mind me asking Glenn, how long or when where you 13/14? Will put some context around it for people.

I've been stopped 5 years now and loving it. I started on and off when I was 17 .. im 36 now.

13 was 50 yrs ago..1963... before a lot of you on here were born.. I think that works out to 47 years of smoking. Starting of with a packet of 10 Greys a week for 1 shilling & thrupence to two packets of Winfield Blue 25's a day before I stopped.

Bump.

Post #1, day 1. Cold turkey, as I'm not convinced the pills I was taking for it last time, actually did my head much good. Smoking really 'is my vice', has been for years & years. I don't smoke in the house, never really have, but I spend quite a bit of time in evenings / weekends out in the shed.................

I've thought for a long time its just a weakness in myself, the not giving it up bit, & I hate weakness at the best of times........

Post #1, day 1..............teeth gritted a bit already............

Well done at wanting to succeed , Is it hell in trying yes but you have to push through it. I smoked for 29 years (2 x 50gm packets of roll your own a week) before kicking it , over 2 years for me now and to be honest I still get a craving evey now and then but I am determined not to return to the foul smelling stuff.

Stay strong and post on here and we can support you as you go along.

Good luck.

Good luck mate, have quit many times now... I am hopeless.

Funny, I could tell you were a smoker just from your attitude on here...

You will be amazed at just how relaxed you will be now that you no longer have to worry about when you can have you next drug fix. You will also enjoy having a clear throat and an extra few notes every week to spend on other crap you don't need.

It takes three weeks of withdrawal for the sh*t to leave your system, it will be hard at this time of the year with work do's and Christmas and new years party's, especially if your mates are smokers.. you just need to prove you are the stronger man and refuse to smoke, it will drive them crazy, they like to see others are as weak as them to validate the drug addiction.

Keep us updated.

Thanks guys. ;):) You're cracking me up Graham, re the attitude bit  ......who, me?? :) Gee, I think at times I'm a 'night-owl - I've got nada on some people here, haha. I've been trying to change some bad habits over the last few weeks - I drink lots of coffee, & theres usually a smoke involved there too. Last coupla weeks been using the 540 whenever I can, as I'm bad for smoking whilst driving my other vehicles. Theres some neat reading in here, I dare say I'll read it a few more times yet!!

Without using the pills to stop, as time moves on after your last smoke it just becomes a bit like your brain & body start having a big hissy fit @ each other, as the default setting is it all being fed nicotine.

Supplements only prolong the quitting, all you are doing is replacing one method of taking drugs with another, its like a heroin addict saying he is going to quite smoking it and then starts injecting it.

Someone's read the Alan Carr book....

Which I can recommend being a great way to think differently about cigarette smoking.

Have read it three times, first time quit for two years, then got into cigars, then cigarettes... book only works once, now its as simple as will power and getting the drug out of the system for three weeks. For me It is hard when socializing, I love having a drink and a smoke with my mates.

I never suffered from that. I could still socialise, drink beer, sit with smokers and it never and never has worried me or made me want to smoke again. The smell is recogniseable.. but doesn't worry me. I feel sorry for woman smokers because they stink... more than their nice perfume
