BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 Hi to all The old man(BMWolf) and I are heading towards the end of a 7 year build of our BMW E21 Race car and I thought that I might post a chronicling of our battle with the beast. The car we started with was an E21 323i Gold with a bent rod and a hole in the block. On blocks it went and away we went
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 With every nut, bolt and sticky piece of plastic riped from the car we started rust repair. the roll cage was squeezed in next.
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 With a block that had a hole in it the decision was made to buy an M20 out of a 525e from Mosen which went under an extreme rebuild
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 As the e21 front end is known for its lack of skill and ability a new one was designed and fitted
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 Because the e21 comes with 4 stud hubs and wheels, the need for more custom work arose. Two large and two slightly smaller aircraft grade aluminum ingots were purchased to be made into new front and rear hubs

thorburn 121 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 The rod and block destruction is great. Looking forward to see what's going into the m20 build
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 The people have spoken and we have more to show!! :-) Before the ingots could be machined, rear end components were made to replace the old ones then fitted to the newly powder coated parts
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 With the ability to make the hubs any way we want the standard rear disk, drum combo was not going to cut it. So the front vented disk, twin pot calipers and brakes were moved to the back. Two small floating calipers were added to work as a standalone hand brake. Two large 4 pot Wilwood disks and calipers were fitted to the front
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 Now to the fun bit the M20; The block was powder coated red and honed to new The valves were cleaned and lightened and the head port polished and in the heart of a dark garage the "master" constructed a set of needle roller rockers to replace the standard ones
thorburn 121 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 How is the rear rotor attached to the hub? I'm guessing magic
OLLIE 26 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 wow! this is awesome, you have my full attention ... what are you doing to the M20? what capacity is it going to be?
BMWolf 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 How is the rear rotor attached to the hub? I'm guessing magicThe rotors are spigot-ed and cap screwed to the back of the hubs with 8 x M8 316 SS screws

BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 With a custom front suspension in the car the Macpherson strut needed to be modified so with some fabrication work the original strut was made in to a fully adjustable one
BmwolfJR 0 Report post Posted October 11, 2010 The petrel tanks were sent away to be powder coated red and then fitted. The dashboard was cut in half and fitted with our new steering wheel. The dashboard was later removed in favor of some thing cooler (more on that later)
