2012 M5 photos

This is just what i read but I think it looks GREAT! if it actual turns out like this.

Previous reports have suggested that the 2012 model will drop the current 5.0L V10 in favor of a 4.8L twin-turbo V8 with output reaching close to 600-hp. It is expected to be mated to a new 8-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Also new for the next-generation M5 will be BMW’s KERS (kinetic energy recovery system) technology taken from F1, complete with a boost function and fuel-saving technologies including cylinder cutoff.

Hmmm, quite conservative looking, not shouting like the E60 - the E60 M5 honestly sounds like a diesel starting up, they only sounded good under heavy load IMO. V8 can only be better.

M cars should not be Turbos - end of story.

It all begain with the X5M and X6M and most die hards don't consider those to be real M cars in the traditional sense.

Having said that, I am sure it'd be a cracker of a car.

Yip i likey very much, To those of us who do like the looks and the power it will have I guess we can only dream and look as i think unless ya win lotto there is a sh*t show in hell any of us will be owing one. Hell i will be lucky if i can pay the bill of my E46 going in next Wednesday to get this 0-2k rpm problem sorted out.

BMW had no choice.

To keep up in the HP wars AND make the car meet EU emissions turbocharging was the only way.

Still. Come on, it looks tits. Me likie.

Driving the 550i is an exercise in restraint, I can't imagine how quick this is gonna be.

I second that! Had many close calls in a 550i....... This new M5 WILL be such a winner. Cant wait.

Exactly right!!!! This is the only reason why BMW started to use turbo engines... Emissions and power ration. Europe is getting crazy now about greed cars so here we go. Even stupid Opel made a 1.5 litter car producing 210 hp if i remember right. otherwise we would see some awesome naturally aspired plants!!! But we won't lol .... SAD!!!

I'm more looking forward to the 1 series M car TBH, it will be the spiritual successor to the E30 M3, and BMW know that so it should be a corker.

This is going to be too fat, too soulless, and I bet it will be filled with useless heavy technology. Fine for the road I guess, but my bet is it will be close to, or over 2 tonnes. E39 M5 had the right formula.

Turbo + turbo, you're right but they are twin scroll so it's turbo+ turbo+ turbo+ turbo. Can't wait to drive this, will be insane!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought twin scrolls just improved the efficiency of each individual turbine by providing less disturbed exhaust flow, rather than acting as separate additional turbines.

Am due for a course on the non M V8 TT but have been told it's like two turbos in one, two turbines putting in twice the air etc.

I concur.

Embrace technology or get left behind sounding ignorant.

I can’t afford one either but im not about to bag it, the E39 was heavier than the E34 and yet felt lighter and better balanced, the E60 was heavier again than the E39 and yet was better balanced and even more responsive.

Like all previous M5’s this new car will be number one in its class from the first one produced to the last, its only after they stopped making the E60 that Jag took its number one spot with the XFR and this new M5 will be a powerful response to that.

Logs out dreaming of 600+NM at 2000rmp and no rear mufflers :wub:

I was comparing them in the sense of an analogue vs digital car. E39, manual gearbox and a relatively simple drivetrain vs E60 with a million different settings. I have no problem with advancing technology, as long as it doesn't rule a car.

I guess I was a bit hasty saying useless technology. Of course it's going to be useful. What I should have said was the ever increasing weight of M cars is eroding brand image. 3 series is now old 5 series weight (almost), 5 series is old 7 series weight etc. I realise this is to do with safety standards and public pressure for loads of equipment, but is there a happy medium? Jaguar seems to make a relatively light car for the size.

Off topic, did the US market eventually get a manual gearbox E60 M5?

Dont forget though, the 3.0 F1 V10's put out 750-800kw and BMW has that knowledge...so power output via N/A engines should not be the issue!

IMO BMW + Turbo just cheapens things up in my eyes (obviously not the cost) and brings some of that Bimmer Aura down :rolleyes:
