Late 80's icons for me...

E30 M3 (would still kill for one...)

Sierra RS Cosworth (can't get past the plastic interior now)

Ford Escort RS Turbo Custom, only came in white, can't believe I ever liked them now! Came as close as owning a Mk3 Escort - but not a turbo unfortunately.

post-2707-1297047512.jpg

Peugeot 205 1.9GTi - first thing I bought when I graduated from uni.. great fun but interior tended to rattle and fall apart on you regularly.

I know where there are 2 XT6s (6 cyl' versions) sitting in a paddock, not far from where The Last Samurai was filmed.

Shweet, the XT6's are even rarer, so few of them on the roads now. I still have a hankering to buy another

hated the box shape of the e36 when i was young. but now i own one :)

I remember when the E36 came out, mum had a since new E30 and I hatted the E36, BMW had sold out in my 11 year old eyes... l Liked the E36 M3 when it came out in 94 in all its Dacar Hero Colour glory, went for a test drive in it with my old man, was a dream car... drove a few years later and fell out of love.. Should never spoil a childhood memory, it was like going back to rainbows end (theme park) as an adult.

I thought my dads brand new at the time Toyota Corona GLX with leather was awesome.. these days. Hmmm.

Also thought my mums PT cruiser was cool when they came out, it got more attention than a Ferrari. Cant stand them now.

The Dodge Viper was like taking two E's and watching your favorite band to me as a 12 year old, these days... well they are still kick arse dont they!

I used to love anything JDM in the early 00's but now I cant stand jap crap.

um hate to admit it but BMW's, I had been a fan boy since the day I first set eyes on a mums new E30, loved all BMW's regardless, they could do no wrong in my opinion all my life but they just disappoint me now-days, my wife's E46 is the biggest POS I have driven in a long time, I only get excited about latest M3 and the original cool E30's now

Nothing wrong with boys to men.

Could add Aqua, 5ive, Vengaboys and others to that mix too.

Geeez, they're not that bad. The main problem with mine is that you have to be going quite quickly to make it interesting, which is not appropriate in town.

Its not that they are bad, far from it, its more that I had remembered them to be a lot more awesome when I was a kid. Spoilt the memory for me. Some things are best left in the archives.

Compared to the E30 M3 or even the M325i the E36 M3 is bloody sedate.

A continuation of my rant at the BBQ.

Apologies to all E28/30 fans but, lets be honest, BMW either employed the designer of the Cortina, or they copied it when they built these models.

Really they are just a box on wheels. I'm not saying that they are no good they are a BMWs after all, but the design is totally uninspired.

Then came the E36. Thank god at long last the designers broke away from the mould of horrible boxes and built a car that showed individuality and style. My personal choice is the coupe (thats why I own one). Just look at the profile. They look like a wedge slicing through the air, long straight lines running from the very front all the way to the rear. The designers brought in aerodynamics as a design tool instead of their box.

Unfortunately, they lost the plot when they designed the E46 when they thought that lots of curves would look better. They don't.

Just my personal opinion, but the E36 coupe is the best looking mass produced vehicle that BMW have built.

Mk 1 Escort Mexico and Lotus Cortina when I was your age Dan.

Yeah, to those! I used to walk to work every morning when I was 16 past an Escort Mexico parked outside a house in Lynfield. A little later I sold an RX2 coupe and bought a beautiful MK1 Escort Sport. I wish I still had them both!

I can't agree - they have 300hp. They destroy an E30 (M3 or not) in a straight line. Plus, the engine's great - that's why people stick them in an E30 when they want to make them faster.

They're also much faster round corners as they have a pretty decent rear suspension design. They're just a little uninspiring unless you're going quickly, the steering's not that great and they feel heavy and (sorry Brian) I don't think they look great. They're definitely not sedate though.

(super-late edit) - they do have the longest accelerator pedal in the world, and you have to request at least 5k rpm from the engine room to get decent performance out of them. On this basis they might feel a little sedate.

Funny you should say that Brian. I find the E36 to be the most uninspired plain jane looking BMW of the lot. Have never liked them in stock form. I especially don't like the headlights and interior. They are a German Toyota Corolla to me. Nothing interesting. Nothing special. I like the older designs. 2002, E30, E24. I think that the E39 was the best looking mass produced BMW though. Especially the facelifts.

here here!!!!!!

E36 I think was the worst line of BMW's made. E46/E30 the best haha sorry Brian. The E46 M3 and E30 M3 in my view are the best looking BMW's around.

That's kinda true. Still fast though.

Back on-topic - should I feel guilty for generally liking the way mine looks (even though objectively I don't think they're all that good looking).

I adore the Ferrari 288 GTO

Posted Image

Used to like Subie B4s, was considering getting one instead of my 5 and now I can't stand the look of them. I don't have many years to look back on though.

From wikipedia

n 2008, a British buyer[7] bought a 250 GTO that formerly belonged to Lee Kun-hee of Samsung Electronics[8] at an auction for a record £15.7 million.[9] In May 2010, BBC Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans bought chassis number 4675 GT for £12 million.[10]

288's are a bargain.

There is fast, and there is fun. I would sooner a E30 M325i than a E36 M3, sure they are not that fast but they sure make me smile.

I know the E36 is capable and I respect that it was the best car in its category the whole of the 90's.

Didn't want to offend.

Looks are subjective with cars Brain, I don't like pretty cars -_-
