Better than nothing. For that price they only have to stop one fine (I mean remind you of one blind corner.....) and it's paid for itself. Im in

Save the money and get a v1. I got mine cheap off trademe (~500) and never regretted it.

Yeah it's only got to save you one ticket to pay for itself, but in the case where it does pick up the radar before the radar picks you up, you might be so used to it going off for false alerts that you just ignore it..

Exactly! total waste of time IMO, i've owned several detectors inc a cheapy. the cheapy ($150) which was the first one i bought years ago i actually threw away not long after buying it. was totally useless. yes it did pickup Ka (police) but it was constantly beeping at everything else too so there was no point.

I can recomend the Escort 8500 x50, V1 and my current Escort 9500ci detector/jammer setup. (all of which i own/owned)

You can't go past a V1, best possible unit to buy, not bullet proof, by far not bullet proof, i won't go in to details.

I wouldn't ever ignore it. I don't intentionally speed, but it happens, and if going to beep every 2 mins and get me to check my speed, that's invaluable. I wont be using it as a tool to get away with speeding as you all seem to be. Its no wonder they want to make them illegal. Everytimei have been pulled up for speeding it has been when I have been unintentionally doing so. Now that I sit on borderline lost license, I realise I should have invested in one ages ago. I genuinely think less technology is betterr for these

I dont understand, how can you be borderline losing your license if you dont intentionally speed?

Easy Andy, I was sitting on (from memory) 70 or 80 points, gathered from: 111km open road, 81 in a 70 (outskirts of a rural town) & a failing to stop (completely) at a stop sign. All in a 12 month period. In all cases the officers at the time were sympathetic (almost apologetic) but insisted that they had to act on instruction.

Friendly argument here.

But I think you'll find that we who choose to invest money in this safe insurance of a quality radar detector are not irresponsible dangerous drivers that hop in our cars and go out to speed/invade the police.

You'll see that people like Matt, I think Tom has one, Dad has had one fitted on all his cars since the M3, Sam W, and many more actually own very respectable cars. I'm pretty sure all of the above don't drive and speed dangerously on the roads, but on a trip, we all pass cars/trucks and honestly who can pass these guys without exceeding 120+ without actually causing a potential problem, I personally find that people that pull out into a passing lane at 105-110kph cause a massive risk as you have other cars behind waiting to pass and of cause you can see the problems with a que of 5-6 cars in a passing lane at, lets face it walking pace compared to the vehicle they're passing.

Yes, the radars allow us to possibly escape a heffty fine and possible loss of license. But in a way they allow us to safely ( confidently ) pass other cars at a safe speed of which to pass them over crawling past on the wrong side of the road at a slow speed, which in my view in this case is the more dangerous way of passing.

My 2c.

I actually got a ticket for doing 118kph in a 100, and the radar didn't even bother going off.

Cop said his new radar can lock faster than a radar detector can detect/react to it giving the right conditions.

Strangely Jack, i used to follow your train of thought. But since I got the 320i and sold my Subaru I have noticed it is entirely possible, and indeed quite safe and socially acceptable to pass cars at 100-105kph in a passing lane, and 90% of those out there do it this way. If you cannot pass at the speed limit, either you haven't picked an appropriate gap, or the vehicle in front is not going significantly slow enough to even justify passing them.

Highly likely he pinged you with a laser gun, in which case there is no point in detection you either Jam the gun (with jammers) or they get a reading almost instantly.

and as for it going off lots being a good thing .... alot of the cheap ones do not have the ability to disable certain bands (eg. X band) which are not used by police here but are used by pretty much everything else. in which case if you drive through a built up area it will be going off non stop and will only be of use on the open road. Although arguably you cannot/should not be going fast enough in built up areas to need it.

Also would like to point out that i don't own an expensive system because i am a speed daemon i simply have it because i got it at a ridiculously cheap price and thought well why not.

anyway more to the topic .... imo buying one of these is not worth it you would be better off spending abit more on a more "quality product"

Pinged me with a lasergun... whilst driving his car?

Radar detector also has laser detection.. which I've watched them laze me, it's quite annoying when it goes off due to Lazering.

56 in a 50 which was a genuine mistake, 62 or 63 coming down the wainui hill road, camera right at the bottom of the gradient.. Usually story, and a 12x on the open road passing a Honda on cut springs. I wasn't going muck around being behind this guy, and I believe the speeding to be justified. The cop agreed with me and told me had he seen the Honda he would have let me go and pulled that, but he didn't. He told me he was going to radio ahead to catch it though. Admitedly this was intentionally now i think about it, but more than justified. Am i more likely to die from a spring falling out the back of the car in front at 100kph of from passing on a passinglane at said speed? Regardless I sit on 95 till July. I'm in no way proud of this obviously, but it's the system, and I condone the use of bigger demerits and smaller fines

I had the Top Beltronics 5 years ago, cost me over $1000, in 12 months I had 3 tickets with it. Not beacuase it didn't save me, I just think I tended to speed more. Also had my car broken into, radar in the glove box but I suppose they saw the marks on the screen.

Now I have no radar, Consistently travel 1200+ Km's for work a week on the open road at varying hours of the day, and haven't had a ticket for over 2 years.

Go figure.

Did you actually get a ticket for doing 56 in a 50, or are you full of sh*t? That seems unreasonably harsh.

cant have been laser if the car was moving then. yes a detector will detect laser but if it has alerted you then it is already too late they have a reading. hense jammers.

Haha mate got pulled over in Pauanui going 54 in a 50 zone. The cop let him off .. but seriously? Why waste 10 mins to warn him?

Generally, isn't it 10% not 10k?

I.e 56 in a 50, 110+ in a hundred etc etc

As for the radars, if a deals too good to be true, it usually is.

or the car you're following doing 70kph on the motorway has just sped up to 110 on the passing lanes and then back to 70 after the passing lane ends

yea those people I do break the law to pass (never over yellow lines though, that's just plain stupidity) and that's really the only reason I have a detector

otherwise I'm always sitting on the posted speed limit, even with my detector plugged in

Nice and slow wins the race, also wins the cops also.

I don't have a detector or anything, I just have a mindset that I don't want a driving offence on my record as a pilot so I never speed past the limit. It wins.

I'm actually a bit of an anomoly amongst my friends ... I've only ever had 1 speeding ticket (back in 2008) and no other offences at all ... yet almost all my mates have lost their licences between 4 and 7 times now for various offences
