E28 535i Project

What underlay did you use?

can't remember the type of foam I used, I basically felt up every type of foam in the store and chose the one with perfect density, the old stuff was way to thin and was useless. ill let you know next week because I need more...I used 1.5mm water proof rubber (the one down from neoprene). It's about $37 per meter.

Today was not so fun...I totally f*cked up the engine pull. set the crane up wrong, chains were wrong so pretty much did it red neck style and used some ratchets and ruined a few aircon radiator fins.

good work i remember those days , done about 4 swaps in my e28 since i have owned it , yea not much room lengthwise in a e28 engine bay , best to strip as much off the front of the engine as you can , fan , hub , p/s pump brackets etc etc

look forward to the end result

sound insulation should make it nice and quiet

Alrighty.

After I pulled the B28 engine out this is what has been done.

Water blasted the engine bay so it's a lot more red and shiny...

New fuel, power steering, coolant hoses.

Old, hard and cracked.

DSC_8491_zps57e09492.jpg

New and flexible (still need to replace the power steering pump return)

DSC_8497_zps7d0519db.jpgDSC_8498_zps47f0d6f1.jpg

Mark offered is assistance to paint things (he f*cking loves cleaning and painting)

Battery tray was getting a little worse for wear, nothing serious but I thought sand back and paint would be a good idea.

- sanded

- sealed

- painted

a huge assortment of torx bolts... lets hope the Bentley Manual tells me where to put them :)

DSC_8534_zps6bc942d4.jpg

If you know about these transmissions you'll spot that the supporting brackets for the steel plate are custom, which is most likely why my shifter always hit my centre console when in 2nd and 4th...OEM brackets are on their way as well as trans mounts and throw bearing.

Aircon mount fitted, I pretty much had to re-tap the blocks threads since it never had aircon. The threads had corroded a bit.

I still have the starter motor, exhaust and loom to fit. And I'm waiting on my order on transmission bits.

haha good spotting, that's because the engine needs to be turned just a few degrees to the right in order for the pin to fall in. However it's happened to me to many times where I turn a top heavy engine and it falls very quickly 180 degrees.

I am officially on holiday, which mean this project WILL get done during the christmas/new years break. At the moment I'm tying up lose ends while waiting patiently for my last crucial pelican parts order which contains the crank position sensors. This was a slight hiccup on my part. The M30B28 was non motronic so didn't need crank sensors on the bell housing, that means I am missing the holes in my getrag 260. I am taking it to an engineer to drill some but I need sensors for the engineer to use as a reference. Since that is taking so long to arrive Brent has been nice enough to send me a second hand sensor to use.

Apart from that set back, I'm pretty much ready to drop it in.

When I first took the engine out i took a few reference photos incase I forgot where something went, I decided to upload them and place them beside todays photos, it's pretty cool to see the difference.

Here's the assortment of update photos (sorry if there is no real order)...

I have various things still to arrive.

copper nuts, clutch slave, PS filter, washer fluid hose/tee join, trans mounts, 1.9 Z3 shifter (F*ck yea)

Lets hope the next pics and probably video you see is my engine in and started :)

The lengths I go to just to get the rubber boots on...

DSC_9905_zps0a6612a4.jpg

DSC_9909_zps540cec1e.jpg

This loom/engine is clearly from a 635csi, a few changes have been made to the loom to suit the E28 I think, just tidied up the previous owners twist and tape method...

DSC_9912_zps52648d70.jpg

I decided to clean the garage and I found the crank sensors I thought I threw out, lucky my order was delayed so I canceled them and saved $100

then spent that $100 on an engineer to drill some holes hahaha :(

DSC_9918_zps5289b9cf.jpg

DSC_9916_zpsc5dd6c34.jpg

First time putting a clutch/gearbox on and got it to slot in second time after eyeballing it.

New shifter seal

DSC_0462_zps1088b466.jpg

I heard the earlier version of this thingymajic is prone to leaking, later models had a rubber gasket, so I used my arts and craft skills to make my own.

DSC_0464_zps5747f51a.jpg

Shifter bits and bobs

DSC_0475_zpsf193871f.jpg

First things on the list, the shifter plate mounts…and small problem, the threads on the gearbox are M10 not M8 (same with the spare I have too) strange.

no worries I guess.

DSC_0482_zps44f2bbfa.jpg

DSC_0519_zps1510f0ee.jpg

I was bored and couldn't wait any longer for the copper nuts from the US so just went out and picked up some brass ones and attached the exhaust manifold.

DSC_0492_zpsc2cc4076.jpg

I was going to go ahead and drop it in tomorrow but I need the locking washer to go over the output flange nut…I guess ill paint my air box or something instead.

very nice , if you are going to lower it in complete like that , i would remove the ps pump and brackets , ac pump and brackets , front dampner etc , less likley to scrape you a/c condensor / rad support etc

Cheers guys,

I have spent about and hour playing around with my engine crane perfecting how I'm going to drop it in. The AC bracket I think will cause the most issue and ill watch out for the dampner+PS pump.

I also think the angle of the car it's self is quite important, if it's jacked to high it means the engine has to be on much more of an angle or else the gear box won't make it under the firewall and the dampener etc will hit the front of the car...

I guess ill find out :)

awesome!Would it help if the car was jacked up at the back somewhat?I Or the front wheels of and car down low at the front? Is it possible for the whole front to come of the car or is it only some(like e34) that comes off?

Did you get new carpets etc? And why the rubber over the underlay?

Really love your attention to detail.Feel kinda sad the the 525 is getting destroyed
