dreadful1 7 Report post Posted December 23, 2011 (edited) I've decided that I want an old car to tinker with and play around without getting all messy with electronics and I didn't want to go with an e30 because they're so common so I found this little e21. Its an 1981 316 coupe with a 4 speed manual box. One cool feature is the open top roof, such great for crusing along in summer! As about all the e21's have, shimmy at around 70-80km/h and above apparently getting poly bushings for the control arms would work, anyone here know where I could get some or get some made? Here is a picture: Will take more when I have more time! Edited December 23, 2011 by Yongxi

dreadful1 7 Report post Posted December 23, 2011 I'm keeping this one quite clean and original. Its not that mint.. Paint has been spray canned at places at attempts to repair rust so would need a full respray some point. Need to fix the shimmy first!
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 have been looking at a few locally too, just waiting for one to come up at the right price and right condition. Aparently they are mechanically very similar to E30s in lots of respects, not that Ive read a million pages on them

hotwire 352 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 Looks nice. I do hope, due to their relative rarity now, that you will keep it pretty original or at least subtle tasteful mods

OP6 27 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 Contact Jesse at http://eurometric.com. He makes almost every poly bush you might need for the E21. Based in Portland Oregon. Really helpful guy. Also checkout Bimmerforums, I know it is USA, but their cars have a lot in common with your 316. Good to see another E21 on bimmersport!

Looks like hes the only guy around that makes them eh? Its quite pricy if you convert to NZD and postage. Did you get your bushes from him? May I know how much it cost to send to NZ? starting to really love driving the e21! more so than my e46 haha edit: Another picture at the petrol station with mrs cleaning the windscreen haha. Heino 1 Report post Posted December 24, 2011 Go to SAS in Manukau, they are a suspension etc specialist, we get all older car suspension components refurbished through them, they do a mean job.
OP6 27 Report post Posted December 25, 2011 I met up with Jesse last month in Portland. The complete set of bushes less the front swaybar, inner control arm bushes, the engine and gearbox mounts cost me USD260. I took my old rear subframe mounts with me. Would expect the postage to be around USD50, - could wrong on that but that is what I paid for a similar size/weight earlier this year ( camera gear ) arrived in about 12 days. Wow thats quite a good deal! I've messaged Jesse over his website but no reply yet probably of christmas but I think I'm going to get it, would stiffen the car up a whole lot! happen to have his direct email so I could contact him easier instead of his site? On the plus side, I fixed the indicator stalk where it wouldnt tick back into neutral after I had made a turn by applying a tiny blob of Epoxy glue on the steering wheel side and now it ticks back just like in the old days! Also fitted a tape deck I got from my e36 when I first got it and is much cooler! next up: attempt at reuphoslter all my seats lower it get wheels paint respray
