BMWTouring 20 Report post Posted May 24, 2012 no such thing as a cheap M5 imho. E39 M5's arent that dear to own really... only if you have major engine repairs but they are relitively similair to 540s so quite reasonably priced and easy to do alot of jobs on. antil33t 90 Report post Posted May 24, 2012 E39 M5 is what made me love BMW's.... When I was 9 years old when the M5 came out. Pretty sure there's a poster I made at primary school about the M5.
M5V8 337 Report post Posted May 24, 2012 I have a bit of experience in this area.... I'm on my second e39 M5. When I unfortunately lost the first one I looked around for something else. Nothing came close. A 540 isn't a good car to compare it to. It's a very different proposition. I'm 1 VERY happy e39 M5 owner. You'd also be surprised to know how cheap it is to run. I can easily get 10l/100 on the taupo/wtgn run. Service is $2-300 every two years (altho I cave and service before the car tells me). Yes the car has some weak points. But i still prefer it over any current AMG offering. Yes that is a VERY cheap car. I'd be careful it's been looked after service record & clean check from an expert would be the go. You do the work your self then. What sort of mileage do you get in more round town stuff?I know it shouldnt be an issue but it is,this would be a DD
M5V8 337 Report post Posted May 25, 2012 Name one, I can't think of any?Factory clutch is weak and will start to slip on full throttle over 3rd gear.Brakes are weak for comparative weight. I've warped a set of rotors in 3 laps. Factory brake pads produce a ridiculous amount of dust. exhaust is restrictive They apparently easily brake rear sway bar mounts - however this hasn't happened to me personally. Stereo speakers lack range These are all easily fixed. Plenty of parts to choose from.

I average 12/13L around town but I have a heavy foot. It's the open road where this car truly shines.
philwalter 30 Report post Posted May 25, 2012 Pretty sure I test drove this car about 18mths ago when I was looking. Car was down in Wgtn at that time. Has the comfort seat package, wood trim, and I think an aftermarket exhaust. Seemed to go okay from memory.
