Guest Simon* Report post Posted August 19, 2012 My favourite spot currently is Mimosa in Takapuna (spend way too much time in there) - their coffee is called Kokako I think, and roasted in Mt Eden. The blend is spot on for me and I get doubles without having to ask. My other favourite blend is by first hand coffee (roasted and blended my a mate in Hawkes Bay), and I always buy some for my stovetop when I'm there. I was already a coffee snob, but doing a couple years as a barista made me extra picky, and I'm forever tipping out bad coffee or leaving them unfinished. In the states last month I was forced to drink Starbucks and it's a disaster. I had to have 3 shots and a heap of sugar in the smallest latte to get any flavour I could stomach. As for machines I had a Gaggia that served me faithfully for over 10 years, but I've got one of these lined up now
qube 3570 Report post Posted August 19, 2012 avalanche melt is a surprisingly good blend, consistent too like apex mentioned^ simon* - funny how you should mention that being a barista for 2 years made u extra picky! me too.. (6 years and counting) haha but over the years ive come to accept average coffee, especially from new places i havent tried.. if i need a proper cup, i will go to a place i trust. otherwise ill just take the bad coffee once, and not go back next time.. haha
Guest Simon* Report post Posted August 19, 2012 ill just take the bad coffee once, and not go back next time.. haha This is true! And I might also tell people, "Don't go there, the coffee's sh*t!" Although to be fair, it often comes down to who's making it
M5V8 337 Report post Posted August 19, 2012 (edited) everyone agrees their coffee is sh*t lolyes. but if your stateside. It's the about the most reliable you can get.Get a double shot and it's still 100% better than the drip 'filter' coffee americans seem to love. But agreed. It pales in comparison to 99% of the local brewers here. Choice in Wellington is awesome: Flight, Havana, Supreme, People's, L'Affare AGREED! MD13 494 Report post Posted August 19, 2012 My wife got sick of buying me beans from the supermarket etc. She has accounts with some places and sells some crap (hippie stuff) on a website. So now she orders in a bag of green beans and roasts them for me in small lots so it's nice and fresh.
tmase 19 Report post Posted August 19, 2012 yes. but if your stateside. It's the about the most reliable you can get. Get a double shot and it's still 100% better than the drip 'filter' coffee americans seem to love. But agreed. It pales in comparison to 99% of the local brewers here. AGREED! So true! I still remember vividly my first morning in New York ordering a large coffee takeaway in a diner and being handed a bucket of warm brown water. This thing must have been nearly 1 1/2 litres. They were pouring it pre-mixed straight from some sort of ZIP boiler contraption bolted to the wall. Ughh! I don't mind instant coffee if there is nothing else but this was unpalatable. I was grateful for Starbucks after that.

Apex 693 Report post Posted August 20, 2012 So you would know then! I used to buy what ever was on special found most brands were average and thought I am only saving $2 a week so why not just buy whats good? I swear Avalanche is the bestt off the shelf stuff, lurv it In saying that I have brought many a bag of special roasted "Hippie Stuff" as MD13 so eloquently puts it and it has been utter sh*t. Does not being able to drink instant coffee make you a coffee snob??
dubman 39 Report post Posted August 20, 2012 Does not being able to drink instant coffee make you a coffee snob?? Drinking instant coffee because the cafe at your work isn't worth the $4.2 for an overextracted small flat white makes you a snob tbh Screaming Turtle is a nice instant coffee. Will give Avalanche Melt a go next time
qube 3570 Report post Posted August 21, 2012 kind of random but if any of you decide to go to a korean supermarket (they're everywhere) get a box of instant coffee called "taster's choice" it comes in easy lil bags that u use each time, mix with hot water (not too much) i found that this is pretty good if you are ultimately lazy (like me) and also u can use this, melt the powder stuff with a lil bit of hot water and then add it to cold ice water with ice for a nice chilled drink
