VW in big trouble

Recommended Posts

isn't this essentially the same as the system on some mid 2000s BMW engines where they blow fresh air down the exhaust so O2 readings at the tail pipe are higher

A lot of american cars from the 1970s did that too.

I remember one dodge truck where they actually had some kind of massive fan unit connected to the exhaust. It was terrible. Removing it saved heaps of weight and freed up more horsepower.

Its a bit different. in this case as the onboard computer detects a test in progress and modifies its operating parameters to generate a pass. This goes against the intent of the test and standard being tested for. A direct cheat.

This behaviour is not uncommon in various industries as to standardise product comparison across the board specific tests are done which can be detected by the test item due the specific criteria of the test.

Anything with an specific target for fuel/energy consumption, emissions even noise level are open to these kind of cheats. VW were caught on this occasion.

It would be naive to think they are not also playing the game. The distinction may be how well hidden the cheat is. Ie hidden within maps or step changes in test performance.

X5 was tested at the same time and passed. VAGs focus on diesel may hav blinded them, or at least a few of them

I always had a theory some auto makers electronically made their cars more economical for tests. The move to automatic manuals too has allow them to control the cars performance even further than before with old manual gearboxes.

Seems this is finally proof of such naughty trickery.

I don't blame them though, the tests set are pretty controversial with their requirements.
