This ones done 88,000kms and is a Jap import so don't have a service history. What are peoples thoughts on getting the trans serviced as a precaution, worth it? And any recommendations on where to take it?

Auckland has several good BMW Specialists.

Botany Motor Works, BM Workshop, Bellars Motor Works are some of them.

I'd say service a trans at about 100 000km intervals but I'm not sure it's an exact science, you could ask the workshop to check the fluid and advise.

Welcome - always wanted a 550i Wagon!

BMW say the trans is sealed 'for life' but they estimate life as 100km. Can't be much harm in getting done.. My old Daily was at 270kms when she first had hers done

Totally agree. Life is defined as the average time the car is in the dealer netowork. I.e. 3 years, 5 at a push. You can put a marketing spin on something, but scientists are paid more than marketers

Talk to the recomended service agents. The trans in the e60 is significantly more complex than the earliers trans models, and has a number of 'features' (re risk points or failure modes), you'll do well to get preventative maintenance completed. Plenty of info in "so you just bought yourself an e60" - the most recent copy I have is v3.3 - do a google search and you should be able to find a copy with ease.

Nice car, I drove one today myself. This example was a bit of a shitter, aircon didn't work, sunroof broken, transmission very jerky shifting into 2-3rd, and it smelt bad inside. I felt sure a good one would be a nice car.
