Matth5 471 Report post Posted June 3, 2016 (edited) FFS...it's a manual gearbox as you have complete control over when you change gear. Yea most modern autos let you do that... It's operating the clutch and changing the gear for you... If you still don't get it, look up manual and automatic in a dictionary. I don't get why we're going against basic English when it comes to gearboxes? Edited June 3, 2016 by Matth5
KwS 2421 Report post Posted June 3, 2016 i still think its quite simple. It doesnt matter what its made of, whats in it, or what happens when you shift it "manually", if it can change gears by its self without input from the driver, it should not be classified as a Manual.
Haitoman 110 Report post Posted June 4, 2016 How about not auto, not manual, just call it what it is.... SMG!

_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted June 5, 2016 i can move the automatic selector and move through all 4 gears in my E30 with complete control as well, it also has no clutch pedal. Can I list it as a manual?
Haitoman 110 Report post Posted June 5, 2016 If it has a traditional clutch plate that disengages during gear changes....sure.
_ethrty-Andy_ 2132 Report post Posted June 5, 2016 If it has a traditional clutch plate that disengages during gear changes....sure. the torques converter disengages. its a different method to do the same thing, just like an electronic control unit replaces someones leg, right? KwS 2421 Report post Posted June 5, 2016 If it has a traditional clutch plate that disengages during gear changes....sure. Nope, it still has an option to shift gears by its self. Not a manual. If it was modified to be manually shifted ONLY, with no option of an automatic mode, then yes, even if it doesnt have a clutch pedal or even a clutch, i would classify it as a manual. Matth5 471 Report post Posted June 5, 2016 It really comes down to basic English. Is it operated automatically or manually? Dictionary makes no mention of clutch or torque converter when defining these words...
