Audi a4 avant

So my brother just got a 2005 A4 avant 2.0 last weekend.

I will end up doing the servicing, but its so hard to find info on them. I cant find an Audi forum in NZ so thought I would try here.

What oil is recommended?

Any major problems to look out for, or any common faults?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cam belt ?? Breather & induction hoses, rocker cover gasket, rear cylinder head water housing, temp sensor, MAF, Sludging of oil pick up, front axle joints, suspension bushes..... the list goes on. Similar to any other Euro. It's knowing what to look for and when. 5w30 FS oil required. Is it turbo ? Can do an inspection and report if you  want

It is non turbo so I'm pretty sure its the 'ALT' engine.

It has 78,000 kms, so when should the cam belt be done?

Every 5 years or 120k whichever comes first...if no receipts you must accept that its never been done and do it. Front off on these

I got to drive it and to be honest it didn't do it for me.

It is a good looking car in great condition, and the black leather interior is very nice.

However it feels lifeless to drive. Front wheel drive and gutless.

Nice car but it feels like it has no soul.

My e46 daily is so much more fun to drive.

Same applies to all the other Euros, including BMW. The A4 is on par with an E90 and a C180/C200 in the lower end range of those models

I agree Glenn.

 

I got to drive a modern 1 series bmw and it felt like a cheap Japanese car.

The electric steering is horrible (also horrible on my brothers Audi).

 

I can see why people say the e46 was the last of the good beemers.

Our A4 B5 Quattro Avant was an all-round capable car. Not an ultimate driving machine but nice to drive, comfortable, good feel and handling.

As manufacturers have made our driving experience 'safer', they've taken away the things that drivers actually enjoy.

Electric steering. Have driven a few Audi's & 1 series with it. As far as horrible goes - they aint got nothing on the Jappas - they are the pinnacle of horrible!

Very true!

In our Touran, I "adjusted" the electric steering via software, and it's MUCH better (I set it to the lowest assist level!)- I'd honestly say it's not toooooo far off the E39 for feel... not quite as tight, but it hasn't had the same work that the E39 has either, plus it's a much simpler setup.

 

Initially, you could feel nothing - it was like the wheels weren't on the road!
